I have had to disconnect my engine start battery. I managed to start engine yesterday using the Victron cyrix start connect function. But today I have had to disconnect the battery as it was getting hot on mains charger.

If I start engine today, will it charge domestics ok or will the VCR not function due to no voltage on the (removed) engine battery side?

This is just for a a get home situation.

.... The Cirix info page suggests it does not.close if 0v on one side. I am worried that if I run engine with no start battery and the VCR does not close I will damage my alternator?

Can you move the two battery connections to the same side of the VSR, so they are bolted together?
Or link across with some wire?

I cannot answer your Cirix question ... other such as Paul will do that ...

But on the damage to Alternator matter :

Damage to alternators (diodes actually) is usually a result of disconnecting alternator when its running. Basically the alternator then ramps up and blows regulator. Many modern alternators claim they are designed to not have this happen - but its not good idea to trust it !!

Starting and running an engine with alternator that is disconnected before start - is fine ... as alternator is not excited - therefore not trying to charge anything.

All sorted as managed to get new battery from very helpful Yachtmail chandlery here at Townquay Lymington. Delivered to boat on old one taken away. Cheers all.
