Anyone have a good method of cleaning dirty white fenders?
No amount of washing or using Jif etc seems to work.

I used Starbrite fender cleaner and hull cleaner and a stiff scrubber (brush that is) to get mine looking like new. Hypalon/vinyl cleaners work too. Roy

£m Citrus cleaner, a scotchbrite non abrasive pad and some vinyl restorer when you are finished to give it some protection against further stains.

Mine used to get sticky at the top. Cellulose thinners seemed to shift it but the stickiness soon came back. I suspect it's UV damage that causes it. I ended up buying new ones.

BTW they are cheaper to buy from inland waterways chandleries for some reason. Got mine from a place near Huntingdon.

Cheaper in France too. We bought really big ones, thru line type, with lines at £18 each versus around £30 here. The difference paid for a really good meal out!

leave them as they are and hang them along your outboard side to discourage anyone from rafting up /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

the ones you hang on the inboard side can be cleaned with blue paintbrush cleaner. it works a treat if you've been alongside an old fishing boat.

Having cleaned them I use a domestic heavy duty vinyl floor treatment that leaves them shiny and protected and reduces the need for too regular cleaning. I purchased my last lot of floor finish in the "pound shop" in Brighton, but dont remember the name but have used johnsons and similar in the past. You just wipe it on with a cloth and it shines as it dries and it works very well

Re: Boat remover

poster hereabouts "hlb" will sell you some boat remover mail order. Dilute it at least 10 to one, and the fenders come up like new, unless mechanically damaged by abrasion, or discoloured in the sun.

Re: Boat remover

We were talking about this only yesterday, he's found something even better for fenders!! Still when you've got 20 gals of boat remover I suppose you've got to do somewthing with it!!

And I read somewhere many years ago something called toluene is supposed to be the dogs bolx for fender cleaning, only problem is I have never seen any )-:

When mind get grotty I buy some scrim - like cotton tube material - slide it over the fender and tie top and bottom -

Makes the fender look great from a distance and when you eventually remove it the fender is clean underneath - far cheaper than fender socks and excellent with scratched well used fenders..

Not surprised, Toluene is nast stuff (like many petrochemical products), and will also remove the bolx from your dog...

I use Farecla, the same as I use for polishing the hull. Mild polishing agent with solvents gets the sticky stuff off and makes them shiny and smooth to resist getting dirty again... until the next visit to the dock weall that is.

Re: Boat remover

Toluene................basic ingredient of TNT....Tri-Nitro-Toluene.

Used to run this stuff in road tanker years ago. When returning to base for tank to be cleaned out, there was aways one or two nutters who wanted to drain the dregs to run their cars on. Don't think the valves & plugs lasted too long however./forums/images/icons/crazy.gif They used to do the same with raw Benzine. Now that is nasty stuff, but nothing to do with fenders.
