Dinghy Pump Battery Charging

Pathetic excuse! If you cannot keep your posts within forum rules dont try to justify it. Dont post

Then don't post daft then

You just asked me to do it ! .......................... Irresponsible as well

Go back and read what I said ...

Actually here it is again :

"If you don't believe me - then please go and source items and make a video of you doing it ..... make sure you are well clear when you do. "

Notice the last bit : "make sure you are well clear when you do. "

Indicating how unsafe it is ..

I dont believ it. produce some supporting evidence of your claim

If connecting the battery to a 12.7 ish power supply will be so dramatic connecting to a 14.4 volt source such as an alternator will be even more spectacular.

Connecting an alternator that has a regulator to control the charge rate etc. is NOT same as basically short circuiting one battery to another ... which is what you claim is ok ...

Do you honestly think connecting a low charged SLA via two plain wires to a fully charged lead acid is safe without any controller or regulator ?????

The only time you can direct connect two batterys like that is when they have similar charge levels so the energy transfer from high to low charge is low. We can get away with it on our boats when we have dual battery system because of the wire gauge we use can take the energy transfer and not burn out. But you can touch for example the +ve cable when that happens and feel its warm ... ever wonder why ? Imagine a piddly little wire to the SLA ! Imagine the poor SLA only designed for low amp charge rates !!

The OP asked if he could just croc clip his SLA direct to the main battery on board ... it was obvious in his question that he failed to appreciate that the solar he had for the main would not be in anyway or form safeguarding his SLA from the direct uncontrolled discharge the full charged main would do to his part or low charged SLA ....

You also made a misreading by mentioning the Solar .. failing to note that the Solar was only charging the main. IF the OP had said he was going to use the Solar controller to charge the main and secondary SLA as separate units - then fine. But that was not what the post said.

I have personally seen wedding ring of a pal of mine sliced by an arc that lit up the bonnet area of a car - causing a permanent scar when a lead acid shorted with his spanner .... I've seen LiPo's blow when cells shorted ... I've seen various NiCd batterys blow apart when one shorted with another ... I've seen SLA's split when the charge adaptor to a 12v source failed ...

I really do not need to see the results of this one ...
