Dinghy insurance

It is fairly standard.
All the major dinghy insurers offer that or more on normal policies.
TP insurance for racing is a reasonable requirement, you would not want your grandson to be expected to find a £2k repair bill out of his pocket money.
Let alone the nightmare injury scenarios.
Dinghy insurance is not expensive.

My grandson is progressing from Optimists to Mirrors and realises he needs a boat of his own.

He has been told he needs insurance for racing including third party at £2,000,000.

Is this reasonable?
£3m is more the norm now and requirement of some harbour authorities. Obviously a concern that you could slam that plywood Mirror into an expensive mobo...:)

As others have said, even a dinghy can cause a lot of damage to another craft, or even in the worst case, be involved in a fatality or life-changing injury. What if you accidentally gybe in close quarters and the boom brains someone in another boat? If we confine ourselves to material damage, remember that if you damage a commercial vessel, you might well be liable for loss of earnings. A dinghy isn't likely to damage a ship (though rigging wire in a propeller might require dry-docking), but a serious collision with a large yacht could cause enough damage to require expensive fixing.
