Have read on here that lots of you rate Steel Developments as being good for prop repairs. Been on their site and prices seem good - just wondered if this would be the best choice to send mine to as i sliced a bit off one and dented t'other when ran over a mooring chain a few weeks ago! Any other good prop repair companies worth looking at please or are SD the best?? Thanks. Roy

Perthshire eh!! Can't help you up there Roy, but being as you will probably be posting the said props, then SD is as good as anywhere. Alternatively, Castle Marine in Cearnarfon, North Wales. Had two done there, no probs.

Hi Dave and thanks for that. Will be in touch with Castle and compare prices. SD are doing a prop repair for around £35 +vat and postage. I can fix the other one myself ok. Just need to buy the duoprop tool for about £10 to get it off the shaft thingy. My future son-in-law is a volvo engineer (on trucks and buses) but a useful guy to have at hand. Hope that you have some nice weather down there in the months ahead Dave.

Word to the wise!

Just a word to the wise having been given a laugh at work today. Was doing a service on a large motor cruiser when I notice a guy warming his prop boss with what looked like a Saturn 5 rocket, felt roof warmer actually. To my horror he then grabs the prop, wedges it on the tail shaft, gives it a good tap and then flogs up the nut.
"You don't want to do that!" calls me
"Not gonna lose another £350 worth, the other was new this year!"
Just then an almighty crack rings and matey is now looking aghast at a crack full length of his boss!
Didn't say anything but did think" Told yer." Didn't want to compound his misery after all.
As I was packing the van to leave he siddles over and asks if I know of anybody who can repair £350 of scrap, I drove of with a very dejected boat owner in my mirror having given him the bad news.

Sad but funny tale too. Some folks won't take advice eh? Laughed at the Saturn Rocket bit...!!!

I'll make sure to be careful when getting the old ones off the shafts David.

Heating to remove is not a problem, tension with a suitable puller and heat the bosses. May well jump off when they cool. Just never heat them before fitting.

I have just had a prop with a big ding in one blade and monor dings in the others repaired by steel developments.

I was very impressed by the speed and quality of the repair. there is no way I can see where it has been repaired. i have not used it in the water yet.

Cost was about £50 inc postage and took about a week door to door (royal mail)

I would definately recommend

Hi Al

About mid September during that heatwave... Backing into N side of Luss pier and the water was a bit lower than normal i guess. Just felt the knock and no more..... Sandy area about 20 ft N of N Side of Pier. A guy told me yesterday that there are mooring chains on the bottom there and I probably caught one. Still thats the first in 5 years so can't complain. Yes the Stainless Steel would cost me £3000 and maybe knackered shafts too? I'll settle for £0 - £50 instead. Anyway, think you would be ok in area where I was as you can lift your leg high in the water!? No, your outdrive leg I mean. The hire boats come and go there all the time and they are only a bit smaller than Indiana?

Maybe see you up there during the months ahead. Roy

Sorry, I didn't realise you were on Shafts!!! So too speak.
Yip, around Luss, i thought that area was all soft sand, So thanks for the Info, something else to look out for. I am always VERY VERY caustious, because i've got Stainless Steel Duos on. Would hate too knock them.
There is also a lot of Steel jetty chains very near the surface at Inveruglas, always worth looking out for.
As you say £50 is nothing to recondition a prop.

Was up at the weeken there, The Rain on SAturday and during the night was torenchal, so much that when i got up on Sunday morning there was a small boat sunk on our Pontoon.

Will hopefully be up soon again, hoping there is still more boating to be done this year./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Cheers

No - Legs, but I meant the drive shaft on the leg... Yep soft sand I thought too with the odd hard item it seems. I know about the other chains, thanks though. We went up on Sunday to start offloading stuff and it was pelting down. Heard there was one got sunk last week - on one of the swinging moorings?? Seemingly the water was so rough with a North wind that boats in the marina had covers burst and fenders burst or popped up. Mines tied up like a Christmas turkey and no damage.. Hope yours was ok too. Goona be up to renew belts and service engines soon, fill her up with fuel, then winterise. In February or March, I am lifting her out for a month and will service the legs, new anodes, do the props and paint legs. Might need new antifoul too. Bye for now. Roy
