Digital TV (boaty)

When analogue TV gets switched off (2008 in the SW as we are one of the first) it is my understanding that you need a set-top box, built-in gizmo in the telly, or a satellite dish.(Though I may be wrong cos I'm thick about such things!)
So - if we want to watch telly on the boat, does that mean only in marinas where shore power is available and ship's head is constant? What about at anchor? Will little portable tellys be just scrap? Mine cost at least £19-99p and it seems such a waste! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

There are 12v set-top boxes available, and I don't think they draw a great deal of current, so you'll probably be okay. They aren't desperately fussy about aerials, either, as the transmission power is quite high, so should be fairly adequate for marine use.

This is the one I recommended to a Narrowboating friend.

Alternative approach is to have a TV that will operate on the digital free to view as well as existing analogue, and is multi-standard so will work around the world. - Here is the one I shall go with when the cash situation has improved! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Times are changing. My time scales for long term sailing is about 3-4 years so I'm going to see what happems with technology but it certainly is moving forward. I don't have a TV on board at the moment so I'm not particularly missing anything but i'ts certainly attractive future opportunity.

You can get a USB tuner/decoder for a PC, if that helps. This one is made by "Artec" and currently fifty quid from PC world. Receives all Freeview channels, but the recording function is a little flakey. Get the upgraded software from the manufacturer's web site.
