Does anyone have, or know where I can get (ideally for free!) tidal stream data for the Solent and/or Channel in a non-proprietary format - eg. Excel, plain text, etc. I am writing my own navigation software for a laptop hooked up to my GPS, and have got to the point where I want to add tides.

A last resort is to measure the length and orientation of the arrows in the Admiralty tidal stream atlas, or scan it in and write some software to do the job, but neither option is very appealing.

Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory http://www.pol.ac.uk/ will sell you the data you need. If you do not need high resolution data you can take the info from the tidal diamonds on charts and enter them into a spreadsheet. Quite easy then to write a macro to look up the information.
