Digital Magazines - What we are in and how to buy

If I understand the last few posts, to see a digital copy of an IPC magazine as well as the print version I'd have to pay twice.

Why not simply allow subscribers to download a pdf of the magazine?

Copyright for a start plus the file size would be off the scale.

I am afraid one size does not fit all BUT we are across pretty much every platform. The only way to get it online and in print as one price is with Apple from Oct.

I wish I had more answers but I can assure its one of those things that's easier said than done.

I subscribe to other magazines that give subscribers a free PDF download, they obviously trust their readers not to share them. The size is considerably less than the 500+ MB of the iPad copy of PBO, in fact at the end of each year they send out a DVD with issues for the whole year, and in several languages.

Sadly this is the response that kills my interest in subscribing to PBO or YM

Thank you Nigel for these useful comments.

I could of course buy the print version of PBO and scan it for reading on laptop or tablet. Presumably there would be no way of IPC preventing this. Its attitude to potential customers certainly puts me off.

Incidentally I'm one of the many people that refuse to enter the Apple straitjacket, and I spend a lot of time where there's limited or no internet access hence a preference for stored digital versions of magazines.

Ok I am confused by the attitude comment. If it's my short answers then I apologise as you will see most of them have been outside office hours and I am only trying to get the info out there.

The only thing we do not do in a digital format is the pdf version. Strictly speaking this would not be digital this would just be handing over files and that is something we simply would not do and in fairness given the size of this publishing operation (Time Inc) not geared up to do.

I am assuming the magazines that Nigel receives in this format are form a reasonably small operation that allows them to do this.

I have already stated you do not have to be in the Apple "straight jacket" our titles are available on just about everything now.

Happy to discuss at Southampton if you are there.

Regards

As an example:

Elektor Magazine. Offices in UK, USA, Germany, France, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Brazil, Portugal, India, Russia, Turkey, South Africa, China...

UK International (Circulation 17,500)
France (Circulation 16,000)
Germany (Circulation 38,000)
Netherlands (Circulation 15,500)
USA (Circulation 10,000)
...

They have a section of their website that is for subscribers only, the PDF files are downloadable from there. Simple.

But it appears to me to be pdf behind glass which you still need a reader to view which in fairness is exactly what we offer? the only thing we do not do is offer an annul DVD however once you purchase your digital issues they are yours so you have them in your device?

SWMBO's android tablet has just stopped showing any of the PBOs that she's bought over the past few months, including the most recent one which I was only half way through reading! Any suggestions?
