Don’t panic if you don’t have a tablet (yet !) but still want to receive your magazine in a digital format then simply subscribe via Zinio.

iPad with printed mag subscription is the same price as iPad only. Any objections to two people sharing the sub, one getting the mag and one the iPad only version?

You can subscribe and then give the print version to a colleague / friend if you wish but your details to authenticate the ipad edition must be the same as the print edition. This is done when you get your subscriber number.

Interesing, that new readers can get both. We've been reading YM for around 40 years and didn't see that option. We work through the paper copies in winter now as we spend about 7 months sailing abroad. My wife phoned to sort out a change of bank for our subscription and asked about an electronic version. She was told that you only did an iPad version so we pretty much just decided to stop after this subscription expires.

I thought it likely you'd do Android, Nook or Kindle versions and we could always use an emulator to read it on the laptop. However, we had no interest in buying a second subscription to go electronic for half the year and still have paper copies at home in winter.

We have be in Zinio for six years but admittedly a totally different operation to the print subscription department. however it has been advertised throughout the magazine and website for all that time. I can only apologise if you were given the wrong information.

It is only very recently that we are now in the App store proper and are able to offer everything else.

It literally all came at once.

Seems to be a misunderstanding somewhere. We have subscribed to PBO and to YM for many years and since earlier this year we additionally download the digital versions to iPad when in Greece at no extra cost.

Could be, I looked at Zinio again and it says I can download to a PC or other device. However, it also says I need to cancel my print subscription and then start off with Zinio again.

I did have a look around for a free digital subscription in addition to the paper one but couldn't find it. I have no intention of buying an iPad or reading or magazine on a phone but download to PC would be OK for part of the year.

How did you get access to the digital version at no extra cost?

As I said I am afraid the only option is print and iPad bundle at the moment. I you don't have an iPad then you will have to cancel one and buy the other.

Cheers

I live in Ireland and have complained for years about the price charged in newsagents for PBO and Yachting Monthly; typically about Euro6.20. They they blame fluctuations in the exchange rate, but it has been steady at about £0.80 to the Euro for at least a couple of years now. At this rate the cover price of PBO equates to Euro5.25
On seeing this thread I thought,"What a good idea, I'll get a subscription" to PBO and YM. Imagine my disappointment when I saw the prices!
PBO's cover price is £4.20, the subscription is £40.99, a saving of almost £10, but when I put in my location as Ireland, I found that the price is Euro 85.99. This equates to Euro7.16 per issue, a full Euro more than the grossly inflated price I pay over the counter. How can you justify this?

This make sense. At least it is clear that one can get give out something to a friend but it needs the same details on authentication process.

As a non-iPad owner who does have a Kindle Fire HD, when will I be able to enjoy the combined subscription priveleges currently offered to iPad users?

I will be honest and admit I dont know the answer to that as yet. When and if it comes you will be the first to know.

Needless to say its not as simple as it sounds...

This is a problem of Android/Google's making. IPC have little or no control over it.

Essentially, Apple let a publisher control the duration of what is to them a free App. Google don't. So, IPC can bundle the two for an iPad (you're paying for print and getting 'free' digital access) but Google want a (non existent) cut of any controlled circulation.

Not correct at all I'm afraid. Google will not let you decide to charge for a free app after you've published it - that's the only restriction they have other than setting a price range of between 50p and £100 I think, and they take 30% of the app cost. If you put your app up for free it stays free but nothing stops you developing a "premium" version which you then charge for - many people do this. You could even withdraw the free version subsequently as far as I can tell.

Neither Apple nor Google allow the purchase of anything except digital content via an app and both take 30% of the in-app billing if you do sell anything which, I suspect, is the problem. There are ways around this, usually involving sending you to a payment portal from the app to make a payment for the real-world services and then dropping back in to the app to activate digital content. In fact, as far as I can tell, there's no reason you simply shouldn't just get a free code when by a printed subscription. That code is then entered into an app to activate the digital content.

That's not what I was getting at. If you have a free app (subscription) though Apple you can set the number of issues before the App stops working - say 12 issues. I think you can only do that with Google Apps if they are paid for.

I've got an iPad, but would much prefer to download my free copy to my PC for archive purposes; they take up a whole bunch of storage.

Is it possible to see an old issue FOC on Zinio on my PC, to see if I can download it and then read it okay, before paying the sub for the whole year?
