there are several grades of them, some are only 640x480 and others are either 2 or 3 meg pix. would go for better, mag is in area of 400mm in 35mm camera, and that may cause a problem with motion for clear pix as tripods are needed by many for shooting that length lens. have not seen a demo pix from one.

better IMO to buy a camera with an 10x zoom built in, like an UZI for instance.

Click on image to see review.

On ebay for £270 buy it now HERE

And you get a stonking digital camera for other uses.

hope this helps

My wife bought me a set last Christmas. As bino's they are not bad, as a camera they are crap. I dont even bother to use them anymore.
Best to get yourself a decent camera instead. IMHO.

'Shooting' wildlife from the boat will always be difficult unless you're chasing a whale. Most of the time you won't be able to get close enough, zoom or no zoom.
Only some animals understand this problem.

Indeed the cheap binoculars with camera built in are worth nothing.
When you go for a decent camera with a big zoom, remember that this is optical zoom. The digital zoom factor is of no importance, because it does not add any (picture-) information, and, if necessary at all, can be done better on your computer.

To finish: compare these two. Yes, the second was made by simply having the camera look through one eye of normal binoculars. Astoundingly -for me- it works more often than not.

Henkm,

Excellent piece of lateral thinking about taking a picture through a single Binocular lens.

The second picture you took looks brilliant !

As each of us has a different level of focus when viewing through binoculars, does this have an effect on the outcome of the picture ?

Alec,

Sorry. I'm not into technical things like focal distance etc. Probably had my individual settings on the binoculars (-1,5 for me) set back to zero before taking the pictures.
Do remember I did this with different binoculars. The camera is an older (digital) Canon Ixus.

In fact the quality of the original pictures linked to above is much better, but I scaled them down and compressed them to keep their size reasonable for viewing over the internet.
