What are the main differences between a TAMD 74 and 75, both with 480 hp. Any major reliability, smoke or maintenance issues with the 74 compared to the 75. I'm looking at a Phantom 46 from 2002 that has the 74s.

Regarding engines this should help. Also I believe the 75P is one of VP's favourite engines. saying that the 74 is very widely used.

The phantom 46 is a lovely boat - if you need the third bedroom, other wise the 43 would be cheaper to run. I was seriously looking a few years ago and found fuel consumtion claims from @ 0.7mpg to as much as 1mpg depending on the usuals

Thank for your reply kashurst. I'm looking to upgrade my beloved Phantom 38 as I would need a third cabin from time to time. Is there an issue with fuel consumption on the Ph 46 or is it just within the normal range for a 45 - 50 footer of the era (5 - 6 l/nm). I have narrowed down the search to Ph 46, Prin 45 or a good example of a older Squadron 47/50

Yes I'd agree with those figures , I have worked on many p43 and p 46 , I know 100% the p46 averages 0.7 mpg around a 2200 rpm cruise which gives 21/23 knots over the ground.
The 75 is a cleaner burn engine benefitting from different pump settings, boost, lower torque etc.

I've recently voted with my feet, my phantom 43 has the 75 p motors in and have 33.9 knots on its sea trial. I smiled when I saw 30 knots, my jaw dropped at 33!! At 33.9 I wrote the cheque.

Seriously the phantom 46 is a really good boat at sea and planted in any weather, they did the last ones with D9 500 motors, the torque curve is massive and very low down which means they pop on the plane very quickly.
Do some proper searching before you buy, still some bargains out there and I'd have a p46 over a princess 45 any day.

at the risk of turning this into a phantom 46 love in, they are great. I was fortunate to be feeling a bit flush and bought my T50 as it has similar performance (speed and economy) to a phantom 46 but is quite a bit bigger (49 feet) but not as big as a Phantom 50 which is a fair bit longer and heavier. As VP said there are bargains about. a Phantom 46 with D9s is excellent but a P46 with 74Ps is real quality.
