Mr petrol smugly started up his new diesel engined boat, only to be thwarted in his maiden voyage by the sudden fog that had moved in, he also ducked quickly to avoid whatever it was that was coming out of the fog, he couldn't see it but it sounded scary, a bit like an army of carpenters hammering for all they were worth.
He breathed a heavily particulated sigh of relief as he realised that it was just start up smoke and that the carpenters were harmlessly trapped in the engine bay. He cast off his lines and made his way out between the pontoons looking down his nose at all the poor, misinformed, peasants with their petrol boats and made his way out of the marina.
Returning 1/2 hour later in get you home mode he got to know all the other diesel boaters as he asked each one in turn whether they could recommend a laptop operator happy to work for less than £300 an hour and realising that his noisy but ultra reliable diesel engines were going to cost him a dam sight more than his now much missed petrols while reconciling that he had better get used to warning lights and displacement speed. He has also made friends with an employment lawyer in the hope that he can fire the carpenters without going to tribunal.
Undeterred he now resides on internet forums where he spends his time telling people to avoid petrols like the plague. After all why should they have it so easy, they should get a diesel like him.

The reason Mr Petrol was starting a diesel boat was the last time he had started his petrol boat, he was a bit impatient, and had only waited 3 minutes before casting off instead of the usual 5.

The net result was a classic case of "16 cold cylinders, and b*gger all torque at idle", otherwise known as the "11.4 litre double engined flameout".

Both engines stalled: the wind drove the boat onto the underwater bulb of a nearby Fleming, and it sank within minutes.

Range is a factor for us. The twin petrol variant of ours has a range of about 120 nautical miles from a tank, as opposed to about 240 from our diesel. I would be nervous about a trek across the channel with a relatively small range.

WOW that is one hell of a claim but then I suppose it depends what engines you are comparing.

Ours is a 34' flybridge boat and gives an actual 1.55mpg over varied sea conditions at a cruise of 20-22knots out of 205hp Volvo V6's. That would mean the equivalent diesel would be returning 3.1MPG assuming same speed cruise and same size tanks. That is a lot to ask from 400hp. it sounds very much like another "you don't want petrols because" type statement that just wouldn't stand up if challenged. Then again if you are comparing a couple of knackered 250hp V8 petrols with a pair of well maintained lightly used 200hp diesels maybe.

Thing is diesels of the same age tend to have a lot more hours on them than the petrols due to the fact that diesel used to be 1/4 of the price that petrol was, as such petrols got used less.
