I'm not overly keen on having gas on board a boat but it seems to be the usual method of cooking; now i find that there are diesel ovens with ceramic hobs (Wallas). Other than the fact that i can't find out how much they cost, how do they compare to their Gas counterparts?

There are also spirit stoves that some people swear by, and others swear at.
I know one couple who have replaced their gas system with 240v, cause where they are going gas will be difficult to get hold off. Personnally I would rather carry a larger supply of gas than use 240 at sea.

Previously owned a Nimbus fitted with a Wallas Diesel fired ceramic hob---they do take quite a time to heat up, they are difficult to control the temperature accurately. On the plus side they arer very easy to keep clean and are undoubtedly intrinsically safer than gas.
Current boat is fitted with traditional gas oven/hob. Providng you replace any out of date runbber hoses and make sure that the installation is up to scratch then you shouldn't have any problems.
Having experienced both I would go for the gas for sheer ease of use.

Entirely agree. gas is quite safe if properly installed.
Fit a "GASLOW" www.gaslow.co.uk pressure gauge on the bottle to detect leaks.
Fit a 12v LPG detector (available from BES www.bes.ltd.uk/nav_graf/frames_cat.htm )
Propane has the advantage that it still works at very low temperature and has more calories per gram, butane is more widely available on the continent
anyway it is easy to swap the fittings over see GASLOW'S catalogue

Depends a bit on your plans. Had gas on last boat, and installed a deisel oven and hob on our current liveaboard 40' ketch. Went for deisel because
(i) safer - no gas
(ii) deisel available everywhere and no isues re different regulators etc
(iii) released one of our only 2 deck lockers for safety equipment.

But it was a much thought about decision as you are looking at £3K to buy and install!!!

It's lovely to cook with and we find it's just a matter of getting used to it in terms of timing - but if we were just coastal cruising only ever aboard for 2-3 weeks at a time we would not have done it.
