Diesel tanks

Hello every body,
I'm just about to close my diesel tanks with their big square tops and as advised earlier got the proper cork stuff plus the proper jointing compound from a car accessory shop but so far got only vague advice on how to joint the stuff (two pieces have got straight joints and of course all the corners)
Should I mitre the joints and then stuff some jointing stuff in it (as suggested so far)or should I glue them and if so what glue is diesel-resistant ?(epoxy is, but isn't it going to create a hard point?)

Ideally you should make gaskets from a single piece, but if this is not possible you need to think up a way to avoid a straight gap across the flange from fuel to outside. The best way to do this is to cut the gasket in a stepped configuration, so that fuel would have to make two right-angled turns to get through. Make the steps as long as possible. Cut accurately to achieve a tight fit. Then bed the whole thing in gasket goo and put the lid on carefully to avoid disturbing the gasket.

Maurice, I agree with the advice you have already received from Vyv, but you may want to use the type of gasket joints used by some automotive engine manufacturers, by cutting a dovetail joint. This provides the non-straight joint recommended by Vyv but also ensures that the gasket material cannot move apart at the joint, particularly while tightening the screws.
