Diesel speed boat

My 200hp Merc 2 stroke eats 7+ litres an hour AT IDLE. Yet will get +4mpg at about 20kn It's just horrific at cruising off plane. Granted the 1.7TD wouldn't touch it for performance, but looking at how much fuel the TD uses from that video above... It wouldn't take long to make the saving back over an old outboard like mine....

yeh my last outboard was only a 60hp and that used so much fuel it was unreal was putting in £30-£40 for a few hours boating, wouldn't say no to a boat with an up to date e-tec but the engines cost more then my budget I have for a boat..

Never ever buy one of those!

Best advice on the whole thread!!!

if you do buy one keep a few grand to one side for repairs cos you WILL need it

not an engine for someone on a budget google mercruiser 1.7 diesel engine problems

far better off with a hard boat with a modern outboard or even better a rib with a modern outboard

for sub 20' boats you cant beat an outboards power to weight advantage

I agree with what your saying and I'd love a nice 90hp e-tec but just the outboard alone would cost more then my budget... that reminds me best go buy my lotto ticket and if I win wont need to worry about my limited funds for a boat lol or if anyone wants to sell me one on the never never that be cool too hehe :)

cant wait to get back on the water been nearly 2 years now since I sold my last little boat and really miss it

How much 'project' aspect do you want - if any? Is this of any interest: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fletcher-...9613354?pt=UK_Power_Boats&hash=item4ac8fd25aa ? Would look at myself to do and sell on if I had space, but alas too many boats, projects etc and not enough driveway... (I think the BMW's were 150hp, but might be wrong...)

Edit: It could actually be the 3litre D530 - 5 cylinder?

cheers for the link but its to long for me 6m is my max, went over to Torquay harbour the other day and I'm top of the list for the next mooring but its a 6m max mooring. don't know loads about derv engines yet or drives but I do plan on learning and doing my own work/servicing, would consider a boat that needs work though

You can afford a berth in Torquay harbour and you're worried about the fuel on a bowrider!?????

Believe you me - the fuel is going to be the least of your expenses.
