I have found that Bulgex was the best stuff for clearing the smell of diesel from fibreglass and wood. Don't know about staining in materials however.

Bilgex in the bilges, or Daz washing powder. I prefer Daz. I use also Dettol in my bilges, kills any bacteria and leaves a nice pong.

I've never seen those Daz and Dettol things in Italy.
Did you find them also around here?
If not, could you post some more details? e.g. producer, internet site...
Thanks in advance.

No, never seen them either, I carry some down with me when I visit UK, along with gravy granules etc!! Also get guests to bring things like that down. A bottløe of dettol goes a long way!

daz is a realy nasty washing power. makes clothes clean but then skin itches like crazy. so dettol is then needed as a dilutable disinfectant...turns white when added to water and smells nice...traditionaly smeared liberally all over you by your mom when you graze knees!

Your right, but Daz is great for cleaning bilges, best I`ve ever found, seems to dissolve all thew muck and keeps it in suspension, until you pump it out. I put about three buckets of boiling hot water, with Daz in it, into the bilges, then go to sea for a hour or so, rolling the mixture about in the bilges, then pump it out, when I return to port, I get in the bilges with the old wet n`dry vacunm, spotless!! Bit of Dettol in the bilges, so when they get a little damp, they smell sweet! Mum didnt bother with dettol on gazed knees, with five of us, it would have cost a fortune!!

Hmmm nice tip. Bilgex is dear and all the other similar boatey products have not performed well for me. Will try it myself asap. Dettol is full of "halogenated phenols" which are nasty little devils so I will give that stuff a miss - unless Mums around and I graze my knee!! The other thing that helps with diesel smell is lots of ventilation - especially over the winter - I leave all portholes fully open with buckets strategicallty placed to catch any rain ingress

Halogenated Phenols!! Does that mean its good for putting out fires? Kills bugs, which is what causes most bilge smells, which is good enough for me. I tend to keep diesel out of my bilges, with drip trays under the engines.

Few squirts of cheap washing-up liquid

Every so often a few squirts of Washing-up liquid in the bilges. Leave it to slop around while sailing .... each time you pump out, afterwards .... a few more squirts. Keeps it all in good nick.

Of course once in a while to really get it pristine is the Mr. MUscle Oven Cleaner.

Re: Best by far ....

Arent those oven cleaners caustic soda based? Not for me. But we used to use daz to clean our hands from resin, when laying up hulls, seemed to be the only thing that would work and was skin friendlyish. But will try the oven cleaner, on ovens.

Re: Few squirts of cheap washing-up liquid

To be honest Nigel I dont get dirty bilges, I get no water in my main bilges and only a littløe from my stern gland bilge, so I only do it very rarely, mainly to remove dust etc. But I used to use a lot in an old boat with leaky front cover oilseals and no drip trays.

So you don\'t ....

leave it on over-night .... and that is why you rinse off with fresh-water ......

Done it on many a boat to fit e/sounder tubes etc. - never had a problem....

Re: Gravy Granules ....

Agree with all of that! I loaded up with 12 BIG pots of marmite, in Mallorca. Love it on my morning toast! Cheddar cheese freezes well, by the way. You should see my carry on baggage when I come back from UK. I once had a 500cc B50 BSA engine in a shoulder bag, explain that to security now!

Re: Few squirts of cheap washing-up liquid

Mine only got REAL grot this year when she was launched half full of water !! I was away at time and 'phoned-in' for a launch prior my return ...... Of course the launch action and round to pontoon slopped it everywhere .....

What I couldn't believe was that the boat was near half full !!! and they didn't do anything about it ......

Re: So you don\'t ....

I have caustic onboard, but only use it for my "Scotties Super Duper teak cleaner (tm)" then only a little bit, but I see your point, it wouldnt be the first time I`ve used some very corrosive stuff on boats!
