I need to fasten down an inspection hatch on the top of a mild steel fuel tank. Does anybody know what sort of sealant is safe to use between the alloy frame of the inspection hatch and the tank?

Will a regular automotive gasket sealant be OK? I presume so, but thought it worth asking.

All help appreciated,

I would go for nitrile rubber seals (try <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.sealsdirect.co.uk/bbCMS/bbCMSrenderPage.asp> Seals Direct </A> for sheet material to cut your own gasket/seal)

Or Loctite 5900 (£20+ for a 300 ml. tube - mastic gun needed).
Loctite quote this as the most resistant to Diesel fuel but it does not resist petrol.
Be careful as this stuff takes time to set (3mm/day)
