I came across this in the Screwfix catalogue. Has anyone tried it? I am losing power from my engines and it has been suggested that it may be caused by muck in the fuel system.

It sounds a bit like snake oil - is it worth a try?

I bought this product from Halfords for my TDCi Mondeo. About halfway through the bottle, an injector failed, costing me nearly £400. Probably nothing to do with the Redex, but I'm not buying any more.

Snake oil, IMHO of course, if you are losing power find out the cause and fix.
it reminds me of my dear old dad, had a bedford CA van, burned oil like nobodies business, piston rings were shagged but he didnt want to strip it and fix it, Halfords emporium beckoned, tubes of this and that disappeared down the plug holes in regular sessions, didnt do a bit of good but kept him busy, I finally took the engine out and put new rings in, honed the bores and changed the shell bearings. I reckon the snake oil cost more than the rebuild!
Seriously, what are the symptoms?

Earlybird, I think that was just a problem with that engine in the Mondeo. I had the same problem, needed new injectors, pump, all new pipes, tank etc. What a mess. Even then it still went into limp home mode when I floored the throttle. Have heard the same from several other people. Will never spend money on a Ford again.

I don't get as much power as I did when the engines were new (1500 hours logged). I used to get 10.5-11 knots at 3300 rpm and 8.5 at 2700, now I manage barely 8 at 3000 and if I try to get more revs I just get smoke. I've changed the filters which made no difference and it was immediately after launching so the props were clean.

Hi there

The redex will give you a cheap de-coke, it will not fix a knackered engine and will not make anything worse so i'd try it. I've used it several times before on tractor and marine diesels, usually with good results.

Have you checked your air filters? Also worth looking to see if any hose has de-laminated and is causing a constriction between the air filter and inlet manifold. If that's all OK I would suspect glazed bores due to not working the engine hard enough. You may then need to consider having the bores honed etc.

Try the redex and run it hard

Well that link put a smile on the face ...

Stuff like that is OK for a clean system to help keep it clean but not much else.

I would suggest care if system is not clean as you may dislodge crud that's been happy to sit in tank for years.

Cetane improver why ? Road diesel is higher Cetane than Red ... is more than enough to fire up the oil burner.

I wouldn't waste money on it. If you want to blast crap out - first gear and foot to floor for a mile down road !! (Joke)

1500 hours, ive been told that average yearly hours is 150, equating to 10k miles per annum in a car, so assuming that you have the equivalent of a 10 year old car engine/s?
When you say smoke, do you mean black as in unburned fuel or bluey/grey as in worn engine?

[/ QUOTE ]So you used to get more speed for fewer revs. To me, that doesn't suggest an engine problem, but something eating up the power and the smoke is because the engine's trying to rev but can't.

Possible culprits include faulty transmission, damaged or dirty props or a dirty bum

Exactly what I was thinking....

If you can't get the revs under power it may be a partial blocked exhaust elbow.

could it be that diesel injectors need servicing ? If the spray pattern is not right through carbon build up you will have lower power and revs .
