Diesel range - Beta 13.5 HP

I have a new Beta 13.5HP in my Hunter 23' (just!) along with a 25 litre tank.

Given a moderate speed in fair conditions does anyone have an idea what the reasonable range of this set up should be?

I get the best part of a season out of mine! Seriously at about 5kts it seems like we probably burn just over 1ltr per hr.

Using the well known 20bhp.hours per gallon of diesel or 4.4 bhp.hours per liter and assuming that you use 5 bhp to drive the boat along then you'll use 5/4.4 litres per hour ie. 1.1 liters per hour. If you use 20 of the 25 litre capacity of your tank that's 18 hours range. You could well find that 1.0 litres/hour [4.4 bhp.used] would be sufficient under good conditiond which would give you a 20 hour range.

Most helpful - I'll use a factor of 3/4 to express my full tank in hours - should be enough to get us going! Now where's the sun.......

At cruising revs on my Vega I expect to get 1 hour per litre so expect 20 hours thus leaving a small reserve. Cheers Steve B

My D850 Kubota uses <2.5l/hr @ 2,750rpm, so I'd expect the Z600 (which I believe yours is) should be a whisker over 1l/hr. Best though, is that you can carry a 10 litre container and extend range by almost half again!

My 13.5hp. at 3000rpm. gives me 5.5 to 6.0 knots in a 4 ton, long keel, 29' yacht using just under 2l/hr. Much less at lower speeds.
