Irish boating associations took a leaf out of the french manual on protesting and joined forces yesterday to organise a week long blockade of irish ports and ferry terminals. Havoc could be caused to easter ferry schedules. Apparently there are some emergency meetings today between ISA, IWAI, ICC and officials of the Depts of Marine, Finance and Revenue officials in an effort to arrange a stand down of the blockade while talks proceed.

The dublin port tunnel has been closed as there are 100s of trucks stuck in a tail back right through the tunnel due to the shutdown of dublin port. In the waterford estuary the ISA and IWAI protestors have been joined by fishing interests angry at the recent ban of Salmon drift netting. The only fishing ports unaffected are Castletownbere, Dunmore East and Killybegs. The situtation in cork is intersting as that is where the naval base is but the ships are at sea. Fishing bodies are meeting today to decide weither to join the protest and vent their anger at recent EU quota reductions. Strange to see yotties and mobo's join forces!

We were at the marina today and heard the commotion on the VHF. See on TV News that the army have been called in with water cannons to break up the blockade at Dublin due to the continued cancellation of the ferries. There are now four container ships at the Dublin bay anchorage

Just heard that the blockade ended at 17:00 hrs with another one planned for May bank holiday.

Why do they have to end the derrogation on 1st May. At least in the UK they have nearly two years of red to go.

Just back from the marina and finished putting the boat to bed. The atmosphere got a little heated out there in the bay today! One of the returning boats started taking water and had CG attend with a punp. Embarressement all around! Looking forward to May blockade. Most of the others who didn't know it was on are now up for it.

A very good try ....... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

[/ QUOTE ]Aside from the April 1 angle, in reality this was actually the IWAI Sunflower raft held on Lough Derg last may in aid of the RNLI, KBSAR and MountShannon SAR (ie the 3 lifeboats services on Lough Derg). Over 4k was raised on the day.

BTW, We're on the boat this week (easter hols) on Lough Derg, it's warm, dry, sunny with cloudless blue sky with a nice big high sitting over us for the week.
