Hi All,

There are some excellent threads running on the forum concerning new/ rebuild/ 2nd hand diesels but little discussion on the relative costs.

What, for instance, are the comparable costs for a 10HP unit....

- New, capital cost plus additional installation? Marinising?
- 2nd hand - same engine = very low installation but there are some HEAPS around(so why else would anyone sell an old engine?)
- Professionally rebuilt?
- 2nd hand but different engine?

Intrigued! (and not sailing today 'cos of foul weather)

Dave

IMHO, if you are going to the trouble of re-engining, why put an unknown unit in, when You can put a brand new one in, for the same work. Re-built, maybe, but there are some crap re-builds around and even if it's garuanteed, they won't pay for it to be removed and re-fitted. Personally I would fit new (benchrun and tested) or only fit one I had re-built personally or knew the re-builder very well.

I am in the process of re-engining my Hurley 24/70, I have finally got to the end of my tether with my 30 yr old Petter 5 hp single.

I 'm replacing it with a Beta 10 twin cyl which i have just got new for £2400, a nanni (same kubota engine) was £3200, a Yanmar 1GM was about £2800, I looked at the cost of rebuilding the petter one more time, that would have cost about £600, and I would still be left with a 5hp engine, which frankly struggled in anything of a tideway.

I looked at 2nd hand but was concerned about history, I looked at some which had clearly been submerged although they argued otherwise, and they wanted about £900 so bought new for peace of mind.

Although I have to say the installation is not easy or cheap, modified bearers, completely new exhaust, new prop, flexible coupling, controls & cables, and of course the bloody expensive lift out, and would you believe ### want £135 (and thats after I screamed for a discount) for about 10 mins work, beggars belief.

So I guess that all up it will be about 3k, so I plan to get a lot of use out of the boat when it goes back in

This was an answer to another thread, but you are basically asking the same question so I have copied it here

I bought two brand new 1GM10's for £2,100 inc vat each, obviously s/h will be cheaper, in my opinion they are not ridiculous new.

Don't forget you will also need for instalation;

45mm Exhaust hose about £30.00 for 2m
45mm water lock about £55.00
anti syphon valve about £35.00
if your boat has a 1inch shaft you will need the coupling drilled out as yanmar provide 3/4 inch, this cost me 10 squid at a machine shop
flexible coupling -- about £35.00
Goosneck if required about £30.00

Not trying to scare you, it is just that you will need to add these items to the list.

If you need anyhelp I will be pleased to tell anything that I experienced, I fitted two to my cat last year so have double experience now, and double bills!!

I am starting to question my self as to the 45mm dimention, I am pretty sure this is right, previously installed on the boat I had 50mm from a 3gm30 and 40mm from an old vetus - how unlucky is that

Thanks!.....and another consideration is (I guess) that a new engine comes WITH the relevant fitted gearbox? Dumb question but does the cost of a new engine include the gearbox?

I imagine additionals include anything specific to your own boat (mountings? exhaust? driveshaft coupling?)

This is probably quite the wrong thing to say....

I have a 16ft launch with a Yanmar 1GM10 which I bought as a reconditioned unit (it had been underwater) for Pds 1,000. I have had it for three years, used every weekend, year round, winter and summer, and last summer I managed to submerge it again (good news - the starter motor is integral with the bell housing and a single cylinder diesel is almost bound to stop with both valves closed - bad news - Hitachi alternators cost a fortune to rebuild!). I used it yesterday, I used it today and it is as good as gold.

with the yanmar you get the mounts (too soft apparently) a shaft coupling 3/4 inch but no flexible. Gearbox fitted, you can stipulate gear train upon order.

Morse controls are not included, I forgot to mention these, although the end fittings for the remotes are included.

The engine also does not come with oil.

With a beta you get the lot, even the snaft coupling. No exhaust hose though, but good adjustable hard mounts and controls cables etc. I've fitted quite a few of them and I must admit I'm biased. I have nothing to do with the firm.
