Diesel level inside Racor 500

I took the lid off the Racor yesterday to check the state of the filter element. Both the inlet and outlet isolating valves at the Racor were closed. I was surprised at how low the fuel level was inside. It was just above the level of the outlet pipe. I don't know how the air gets in. Could be low fuel tank level or it could be the "O" ring on the bolt that is leaking. (The "O" ring provided as a replacement doesn't quite fill the groove cut in the bolt.). Note that my Racor is above both the fuel tank and the engine, so I make sure the bolt is well tightened.

Any thoughts?

Did you fill it to the top when you refitted the filter and lid? According to Racor instructions if not it will remain half full and only the bottom half of the filter will be filtering fuel although the engine will still run fine.

That was my though also. Our Racor is also above both tank and engine so I use a small container of diesel to fill to the top after changing a filter. Was still at similar level 6 months later.

Many thanks. I suspect the small "O" ring could be fatter and may try one. Otherwise, all connections seem fine.

And I need to check the level more often! ?
