Diesel Fuel Performance

Heating oil to Red ...

Normally a red dye !! But beware as Heating Oil is strictly prohibited to be used outside of Heating Domestic premises etc. If anyone dipped your tank - they would ID it immediately. The consequences would be rather expensive ... and possible loss of Heating Oil concession.

Don't do it !! is the simple answer. (Best is to get friendly with a local farmer .... but then you run risk of being copped with Red !! but still keep your domestic supply !!)

Re: Thank you, Nigel.

Over here, the government don't take kindly to us running our cars on domestic central heating oil (28 second kerosene). They sometimes take samples from the tanks and prosecute anyone they catch with either "red" diesel or kerosene in the tanks!

Re: Thank you, Nigel.

I remember that in the UK i often heard that controls would be made, never saw any though?
In France the barrels of diesel sold to farmers dont have dye added nor does heating oil eithzer, and electric fule pumps are sold every where.

I thought of buying a diesel car but the cost/condition and stink service costs stop me,and as long as i buy fule at the pumps petrols far more economic in the long run, unless i buy a new car and fit oil heating!

But for the boat is there any reason why a modern commen rail diesel from a breakers yard for £200 cant be exchanged for an old volvo or perkins???and just bolted in and, why do old volvos and perkins fetch such high prices S/H ??

Re: Heating oil to Red ...

while on this subject ive read and seen on tv motoring programs that a diesel engin can be run on anythinh from:

filterd deep fry oil, parrafin, heatingoil, dieseloil, and even old engin oil once walm?????

In Germany the tax dept had to stop diesel owners buying rapsoil at 20cents/liter to fill there car diesel tanks, not becouse it was bad for the engins but for the tax collector!?

Re: Thank you, Nigel.

I would be very interested to know where you could scource common rail diesel engines for £200, please PM me or I could be killed in the rush

£200 engine ...

My Perkins 4-107 ... was £250 and runs like a good-un !! Guy replaced it few years back out of his 30 ftr .... and it sat in the marina shed ..... I needed a cheap replacment for my siezed 4-99 and this dropped in nicely.

May not be exactly what you are asking for - but cheap engines are out there - if willing to take a bit of risk ....

Re: Thank you, Nigel.

As has been said, I'd expect to pay a lot more than £200 for a common rail diesel from a scrapper! Besides, I can't think of anything worse to put on a sailing boat! They are far too high-tech for this application and I think they would be much too difficult to maintain / fix. If I was drifting on to a lee shore with a poorly engine, I'd much rather have one I could fix with 4 spanners, a screwdriver and a hammer!

Incidentally, I used to be put off diesels by the servicing costs but I recently had a Skoda Octavia 1.9 diesel for a few months and apart from being pretty damned rapid, it did 50 MPG and only needs an oil change every 32,000 miles (OK, that's the maximum allowed - it might ask for one before then because they have those variable service intervals now)!

Finally, I have seen HM Customs & Excise dipping lorry fuel tanks in motorway service areas. I've never seen them checking a car but I have heard of a couple of taxi operators who have been prosecuted for using kerosene.

Re: Thank you, Nigel.

A freind has a breakers yard.I paid £200 for a 3.3liter 6cylinder BMW engin, when i asked about a diesel for a canal boat(in case i find one without engin) i asked for peugeot/citroen that would also cost £200 and a V8 rover vandan plas engine with 50.000miles for my old Range rover cost £100!!!

What cars have commen rail?? i heard someone say to have an economic diesel it had to be commen rail?????let me know what car engin your looking for and ill ask if he has one and how much!

I dident think of the engin stopping!!!!But yes i useually use mine only on very windless days, still i was once stuck with a flat battery and no wind then i drifted untill the generator got a charge in but could have used the service battery

umm there really is a lot to be said for old diesels.Though i always wonder how much longer my MD32 will go on???My heat exchangers very very corroded.

Thats another reason for me to wonder if i could fit a car engin on a boat inverter(gearbox)

Re: FBYC
