hi, need to empty about 80litres diesel out of boat fuel tank into jerry cans hopefully as a one off.

have searched - there are submersible pumps for £30-40 but they are all 12v, can you get drill pumps to do this job? (all the ones i can find say "water")

thanks

(there was a neat looking hand rotary pump pic here;

but unsure price, doesn't look cheap. thanks marko99!)

Yes you can. I got one off the net - made by Wolf. Quite cheap, with snap fit garden hose connections and worked welll off a portable electric drill. It was like the first one on this screen except for the hose connections.

I got one for work, it looks like the Draper one but it has a V on it so I suspect it could be a Vitres, from the Amazon link.

I was dissapointed with it, it was difficult to get it primed, IIRC I had to imerse it, and then it was painfully slow. I was using it with water.

Diesel will prpobably go for the impeller but it may last for the time you need it for then you can bin it. I'll whip out the impeller and stick it in some Kerosene for a couple of hours, see if it swells up much.

Can't advise on which to choose - I borrowed one from work that was being regularly used to pump all manner of liquids. Emptied the tank into a pastic dustbin whilst I did some plumbing on the fuel feed and then pumped it back. Very quick and easy.

bilge pump as diesel pump

We did this a few years ago, emptying the fuel tank. prior to removal.

moved the bilge pump & hooked it up to tubes to pump out the tank into a barrel on the deck.
set it going, then went for lunch.
still going when we got back & everything went smoothly.

ps
top tip, remember to reconnect the diesel return pipe to the fuel tank, once everything is back in place

I bought a cheap drill pump from Machine Mart,(OK ith diesel) to pump out a 33 gallon tank, via a filter system and then back to the tank, to clean out diesel bug. Since then two other have used it for similar problems.

I am sure that it will do the job for you very well, assuming of course you have access to mains power for a mains drill. Have tried it with battery drill, it works but very slowly

If all else fails you could use a PELA pump or the Seatech @ £25odd and use later for your engine servicing oil changes.

I have used an Australian gismo , a plastic tube and a ball valve in it ; to start the syphon you shake the tube up and down to create the syphon and the thing works like a snorkel.

At £5 it only has to survive one use! Some impellor materials don't like any hydrocarbons, but they'll work a few times - it's the flash point of petrol which makes it unsuitable. A spark from the drill motor could ignite fumes. Diesel will extinguish a match thrown into it - I've seen it done, but never felt inclined to repeat the demonstration on my boat!

This is what you want:- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FUEL-TRAN...910?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3cbd49c7fe

I'm using one at the moment to empty a friends heating oil tank. Works a treat, just make sure you get the rotation correct(ACW looking on the shaft). Uses standard 1/2" hosepipe, make sure you put a hoseclip on the outlet hose otherwise it'll leak! I mounted mine on a baseboard and just hold the drill down to prevent it twisting.
If the drill rotates the wrong way then the pump melts! It's a plastic body so must be lubricated with the fuel. - how do I know? I used one to empty my boat fuel tank a few years ago but got the rotation wrong this time and the pump melted so had to get another one.

I struggled to do this with shaky syphons and a drill powered pump, it was about 8ft up from the bottom of the tank to the top of the gunnel. Three years on I suddenly had a 'lightbulb moment': the boat was lifted out, why didn't I just lead a fuel pipe out through a sea cock? 8ugger!
Putting the fuel back in, boat in the water, fuel drum on the quay, 1in pipe with foot valve=big shaky syphon, did 200 litres in 3 minutes.
