Re: Your problem is an air leak.

Thanks, I've already replaced the washers and when dismantled have cleaned each element before re-installing. I have some diesel appearing under the engine but had thought that this had escaped whilst bleeding the sytem. Maybe it's from a leak that I havn't been able to see. I'll take a closer look. But now that I think I know where the problem lies I will re-check everything. I suspect the lift pump might be where it is as air has been appearing in the fine filter but the first filter has always been OK. Strange that I can't see the leak, though.

I just have to keep at it...

Re: Your problem is an air leak.

OHHHH DEAR ! youve been messing about with the pressure pump!

Take it to a diesel engineer and get them to service and reset it , then refit it fully assembled! you dont have the equipment to service it and shouldnt touch it!

then do as I first suggested ....and as Old Harry has confirmed...strip and check your fuel pump. then work through all the fuel line connections.

if you have stripped your lift pump before ..you may have put the valves in back to front ..or there may be a pinhole in the diaphragm

At last.... she's going! The problem turned out to be a faulty membrane in the diesel lift pump. The original was damaged (but worked) and the replacement I used (which I got with the boat) was faulty; the membrane/spring joint was not tight. Eventually I bought a new pump and my faith in Volvo is restored along with a significant reduction in my bank balance.

Thanks again to everyone who posted help; most were helpful and informative.

Re:THE Diesel Doctor gets it right ..again

If I remember correctly the new pump was 1400 kr and a new membrane bit was 800 kr.... so yes, I bought the whole pump. I now have a couple of spare pump bodies so I will try and find out about the equivalent for cars or trucks.
