Hi

After discovering diesel bug in my tank ?, I am in the process of cleaning out the tank.

I have a few questions

1. What bug treatments do you use?
2. On removing the various attachements to the tank there seems to be a blue clooured sealant used as well as the rubber. Is this necessary if so what is it?
3. The screws seem to have a material/fibre washer. Where can I obtain these?

The blue sealant is probably Hylomar Blue. Diesel is an absolute ****** swine to seal against, so as well as a gasket various sealants are also commonly used. If your tank is steel or heavy thick stiff plastic like Tek-Tanks you may get away without sealant, the thinner and slightly flexible polyethylene tanks used in many modern boats like mine are much more difficult to seal, hence sealant as well as gaskets. Just the rubber gasket seems to be OK when first fitted, but once anything has been opened up it is much more difficult to re-seal fully.

Re bug treatment: I use Marine 16.
 
We don't use any additive.
We just check the tank for dirt and water once or twice a season and take care not to store fuel for longer than is necessary.

Hah! I'm just getting to the end of a tank of diesel I last filled, according to my log, in 2014! I've never used additives and so far no problems, touch wood!
The next fill will, unfortunately have to be white diesel, to stay legal, so with the biofuel contained in this, I will now have to start using additives; my choice, based on the amount of recommendation for it on this forum, will be Marine 16.
At least now I will have the option, once the dye has been diluted enough, of pumping it out at the end of the season and putting it in the car.
