Diesel Bug Treatment??

Have been told to use Wasp FT Red would you guys also recommend this product thanks...

Don't know that particular stuff, but it's one of those questions you never really know the answer to, like whether a guard dog has stopped people breaking into your house. You can't know what would have happened if you hadn't used it, maybe you'd have got the bug, maybe you wouldn't. I don't use anything, and have never had the bug in almost 10 yrs boating. If I had been using a product all that time, I could easily of reccommended it based on that record!

diesel bug

I had very bad bug when i bought my Princess was only getting about 5hr out of the diesel filters.PBY run tests on about 10 diffrant treatments marine 16 came way out in front. You may be able to get the article if you googel their web site.Any way i tried it and found it to be exelent.I now treat the tank twice a year and have had no more probelms

diesel bug

Princess kindly delivered my new boat complete with the diesel bug. After 25 years of boating and keeping it at bay. So I too looked at the pbo test and it seems that also Strbrite bio diesel came out well.

Is it correct to say that if your filters are changed regulary the diesel bug is prevented from causing too much engine damage

I use Grotamar 71 which came out tops in a PBO test a couple of years ago since I had the bug a few years ago.

You also need to be fastidious with removing water from the fuell and keeping an eye on your primary fuel filters ( Racor, Separ etc).

bug

Diesel bug is a organsiam that grows in diesel. Water in the tank is often a cause .thats why you should always have a full tank over the winter. You can get contamated diesel with the bug in it.The filters block up with a black slug stopping the flow of diesel.A tell tail is the revs start to rise and fall then the engine will stop when you trie to idel .I had this problem for quite a long time when i first got my Princess.Marine 16 cleard it up for me

We had a nasty case of bug about two and a half years ago
Cleaned everything and used a shock dose of Marine 16 then regular dosage of Marine 16
Not a sign of the bug since.

AFAIK there are two schools of thought
1. dose with an additive that removes any water
2. dose with an additive that kills the bug (biocide)

Marine 16 is a biocide
I believe that Fuel Set is a type that removes the water so that the bug can't live.

Thankfully, I've never had a bug or water problem in 25 years. However, I started by using Soltron, then moved to Fuel Doctor and recently to Grotamar 82. A microbiologist suggested changing to ensure any bug lurking with intent that may have become tolerant, was dealy with.

Looking at the Grotamar site, it looks as though 82 is for bio-diesel. Is bio-diesel sold in Guernsey? Maybe I only need the 71.

Just checked with Fuel Supplies (Rubis) and the answer is interesting. They do not sell marine diesel, hence they don't have the 'up to 3%' water as bio addition. Instead, they add dye to road diesel and sell that as marine diesel. This only has a trace of bio in it, at less than 0.1%.

Interesting as this contradicts PBO Sep issue page 6 which states that road fuel must contain a minimum of 4.75% FAME admittedly the legislation is complicated and I have never yet been able to get a straight answer ax to the bio content from any suppliers they just don't seem to know . Incidentally to those people who seem to think I am a web designed they are wrong I am a retired teacher who as part of a previous career spent 19 years in the Diesel engine industry I have been a little disappointed with the way this forum has worked

Hi Allen. Apart from PBO possibly being wrong, do you think it could be because the CIs are not part of the EU?
