Diesel additive.

Sorry, it's a bit like an anchor thread! If you fill up with road diesel what's the best additive ..... I've used Soltron before and been recommended Startron and something 16 (can't remember!) ..... so, any recommendations?

Grotomar always comes recommended in magazine tests and its what i use in my boat, no diesel problems in 8 years or so of using it.

In a now rather old test of a dozen or so, Grotmar and Marine 16 were both way ahead.
The best treatment though is to burn the stuff

Assuming it's for killing the fuel bug then Grotamar 82 it's a straight biocide.

In a different context (road going vehicles that are stored for long periods) I have seen Aquasolve recommended.

i use Fuel Set, they claim that this breaks down the water content in diesel so is burnt along with the fuel.

I must admit to being a bit gung ho, I would just mix it Diesel engines are very hardy! I've mixed a number of these additives with no problem, but never used Grotomar! However if you are worried I'm sure your engine manufacturers would be able to tell you? How is that lovely Flemming of yours?

Just as lovely as ever. I'm in South Africa at the moment but i think MBY has just released their Nov issue and there's a two page spread of two exceprts from our summer Brittany cruise. Haven't seen the mag but hope the article reads OK and that the pic of Play d'eau shows how lovely she is. Takes a lot of cleaning and polishing....

While marine 16 demulsifies the fuel - drops the water out.

Not sure which is best but open to offers.

Marine 16 Diesel Bug Treatment came out top when tested by PBO (don't confuse it with Marine 16 Diesel Fuel Complete which combines bug and other engine protection/ treatment).

The test/results comprising 10 well known fuel treatments are found in Practical Boat Owner 484 April 2007....

Drops the water out? What does that mean? Sounds to me that it makes it sink so it can be drained? I thought water in diesel does this without any help?
Fuelset claim it helps the water to be burnt along with your diesel, makes sense to me, if indeed it does? I've used it for over fifteen years since I had a terrible fuel bug problem and never again suffered with the bug, so I guess it's pretty good?
Also I never get water in the glass bowls which needs draining!

From my experience, most bug treatments seem to work and although Fuel Set did not fair well in the tests, I know many that have used it for a long time and have not experienced any problems. I suppose its a bit like antifouling, stick to the one that works for you.

I do however believe prevention is better than cure in this regard, although some also swear that they have never treated their fuel and have never had any issues, my perspective is why chance it - I am sticking with treatment and Marine 16 in particular for the foreseeable future.
