Would any of you fellow boaters have a 2 1/2 inch bsp die nut ?
I need to buy or borrow one to add a couple more threads to my prop tube which cannot be removed as it was cemented in !

An adjustable one would also be ok

thanks in advance

steve

Here's a thought. Any steam enthusiast societies nearby? Trains/boats/engines. They hoard old engineering tools and usually find a donation to their coffers very acceptable.

Can't help out, but wish you best of luck. Biggest i have is 2" and only use manually as absolute last resort.
Hire shops may be worth a look as we have previously hired electrically powered versions that are meant to be mounted on units that hold pipe in place to be threaded but could just, at a push, be used manually.
Not that i'm recommending such an action in any shape or form you understand!!

Hi Steve, 2 1/2 bsp sounds awfully big is that correct? this would be 3 inches OD. I will have a look at work tomorrow but doubt I would have one that size.

I don't have one but your problem is going to be if you get one "how the hell are you going to get it turned with the tube in position"? A die of that size will need a stock of at least 2 foot dia? And that's being conservative.

I think you might need to consider what you can easily turn when your down in the bilges?

Peter.

Poor ole Steve28 has made a mistake, I think its 1 1/8" BSP, will hire my glasses out for a pint!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Methinks whatever it was cemented in with might not withstand the turning force you are going to apply when cutting the extra thread.
Just a suggestion, but might it be easier in the long run to take the tube right out, then you could get someone to cut the extra thread on a screwcutting lathe.

Thanks for all the ideas, i did make a mistake on the size. I need 1 1/2 inch bsp die nut.
The person/company who installed the tube for some reason put a wooden packer between the fibreglass deadwood and the cutlass holder, this only left 1/2 inch of thread on the end of the tube, to cut a long story short the threads have gone on the tube and in the holder.
I have found a new holder and need to put some more threads on the tube, i can do this if i remove the plywood packer and mount the new cutlass holder drekly on the deadwood.

thanks

steve
