We have just brought our first family sailing boat and this is our first post in the forum as we need some help! Our new boat was sold as Macwester 27, built in the early 1980's and home finished in Guernsey.
Researching her before buying she seemed right though the internal layout never quite worked. As a home finished boat I thought this was just a bi-product of the owner's chosen fit out, which was well done and robust. Yet there were a few nagging doubts.
When beaching her for the first time we were delighted to see how good she was below the waterline, esepcially for a boat that had spent 35 years afloat and sailing the channel islands. We were also please to see that the keel, skeg and rudder setup was dead right for awhat we expected for our new Mcwester 27 . Givern her claimed age , launched 1983, I assumed that she was probably built by Atlanta or Trident Marine after Mcwester closed shop.
However, now she's out of the water we have finally got round to measuring her and it has become apparent that we're missing 3ft of boat! That then started us looking at the Mcwester Rowan Crowns and we started noticing features such as the stern boarding gate, covered up in ours (we assumed that this had been a discarded after build modification in ours), a fibreglass outboard mount , as well as the forward deck hatch and non-slip pads all being dead on for a Mac RC. And as soon as we noticed we realised that her name, Rowes N Crown, should have been a clue ! Though it was the original owner who gave her that name, he owned her for 33 years before she was passed on, but had formall registered on the Guernsey registery as a Mac 27, and I assumed had spent 35 years paying more in mooring fees than he should of!
What we're trying to understand is why we have the undersides of a Mc 27 and the topsides of a Mac RC? Was this something that was regularily done, or are we missing something?
We would be very grateful any light this forum's experts could shed on our mongrel. Please do understand we do lover her, and knowing she's shorter then advertised doesnt change what she is. She sails well , is safe, stable, well build and cheap and even has in mast furling which works!! Any help welcomed
