Detroit Diesels

I'm looking at buying a boat with 2x550 Detroit Diesels - does anyone have any experience of these units, reliability, likely life span, cost of running, spares availability etc? They are obviously less common than Volvo etc and wondered why.

Can't help too much Stewart apart from directing you to a couple of sites likely to be more helpful. Try www.boatdiesel.com and www.yachtsurvey.com. Both should have some info. On the latter site, after a bit of digging around you'll find an article where the author extolls and raves about them. Don't know how you'll find spares for them though in UK (assuming you are in the UK). Sorry I can't be more helpful. Good luck.

Here in the US they are highly regarded for reliability, ruggedness, longevity etc, but I don't know about spares availability in the UK.
