Hello all, I came into possession of a Detroit Diesel marine engine model 5042600 . I believe this engine has not run for more than a decade and supposedly before that it was running fine with no validation of such.
I am trying to dig in into manuals and to learn about this diesel engine and wonders where I should start . Should i try to start this engine somehow or accept to rebuilt it entirely ? Some advice if possible would be appreciated. Thanks.

Starter info on detroit 2 stroke diesels can be found on youtube.
Try Dangar Marine he has just had one rebuilt.
Also Bus grease monkey US guy with a lifetime experience on them.

Regards Clive

Not sure if the number given is the type ... sounds a bit like a serial number or part number ... post a picture and we can try to identify .... any description would be good as in number of cylinders in-line of V formation etc...

First thanks to all the responses. It is super cool to have such help . i worked on cars before but this is something quite different. From what i gather about charts found on several site the 5 04 26000 translate to a 53 series, 4 cylinder , marine , engine arrangement is RA and design variation = naturally aspirated engine.
more pictures with plaque attached . I am tempted to try to start it first but very concerned to do something very wrong.

453 Detroit Diesel Specs

Call Mitchell _ Detroit, give them the serial number for true engine spec...

Take off the rocker cover, rotate the engine with a socket on the flywheel and a bar to observe the movements. . You can also inspect cylinders in situ by removing the 4x lids on outside of block... If all looks good, dump the oil and refill
Turn engine on starter but no fuel (hold stop down) for 5-10 seconds... To let oil circulate...

53 series parts are starting to get more sparse, but should be ok still...
