Deterring thieves

I think you have to be realistic about the cost to you in terms of inconvenience versus the cost of loss of gear. For every device you set up you have to dismantle it before sailing and set up again before departure.
Alarms might be good but also might be a terrible pain for neighbors in any form. In some cases you can't blame the neighbors for smashing your boat just to silence an alarm.

I vote for the obviously strong washboards and lock. Remove or hide any really valuable gear. olewill

We installed an osprey hatch-latch (http://ospreymarine.co.uk/index.html) which was actually on the boat when we bought her but not installed, on washboards that 14mm thick. It would still be v possible to get through the hatch with crow bar etc but it would need smashing and be noisy.

The beauty of this particular lock is that the padlock cannot be got into with a crowbar or other wrench, and presumably one could copy that with any short-hasped lock.

Love the flashing red light idea (though would want to switch it off on a night watch at sea because it would drive me mad!)

An aluminium washboard with flush lock for use while layed up would be good. Most of our breakins are when layed up.
I got one of these

Theres a later model out now. I thought about connecting six smoke detector alarms to it and maybe a strobe on the mast. They could be consealed behind panels on the boat to shatter his eardrums.
Maplin do a portable disco smoke machine. Its on offer at the moment. Maybe this could be rigged to it to fill the boat with smoke so the bastid can't see anything.
It texts you when the alarm is triggered. You can phone it and listen to whats going on on the boat. It does not ring on the boat. You can talk to them too.
You can wire it to the ignition and cut the engine or switch other stuff from your mobile.
With a bit of thought and an evil mind the possibilities are endless.
Needs a sim card. I got a free top up one. The original one requires a bit of tecchie know how. Maybe the later one is easier.
(I have no connection with the sellers)

I assume the scum have their own boat, or are we concentrating on the yachts when we should lock up the tenders? I fitted a very strong washboard made from the bulletproof glass removed when a local bank was refitted, but if they really want in they'll break something else.

But how did you cut that glass to shape? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I use it to plug in the flying lead for my anchor light, which is a low power light with photosensor screwed to the anchor shape and hoisted on a halyard, so no probs on passage /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
