design upgrade of the superstructure from Blue Angel

Actually I removed the grille on the current overhang because Canados dismissed it in the more recent C24/C25, and I assumed that you liked that "cleaner" style better.
But I'd expect both alternatives to be feasible for the carpenter, since the overhang extension has to be custom built anyway, so it'll be up to you to pick your poison! :giggle:

Rgardless, I agree that the perspective was a bit wrong in my previous drawing.
Here's another version where I left the grille and adjusted the new overhang.
By this rate, you might as well re-touch all the BA pics that you have onboard, and do nothing in flesh! :ROFLMAO:

P, I can't see your photos. Anyone else not seeing them?

Hi Callum,
the paint on the wood will be fairly basic, let the yard decide,
also there will be kivigrip on the side overhangs,
yes indeed a lot of preparation will be required.

but one concern is the side doors, those are aluminium, have been repainted in 2017, but start corroding again around the door handle (= is a weak spot)

another issue is the "new" gunwale gelcoat, firstly the collor is slightly off from the white from the hull,
and secondly there are a few crack in seams that need a better finish,
so i'm wondering if a extra layer of gelcoat is feasable here.
all tbc with the yard,
actually we will have 2 yards coming to have a look.

Are the jobs being done in Sardegna? I guess you won’t be around to take many pics?

Don‘t underestimate the interest factor in repainting a boat, what you may find as basic, others will find interesting, especially if they are about to do a similar job ;-)

Very hard to get paint to stick to alloy around fittings unless the dissimilar metals are separated.

Matching gelcoat is difficult, and predicting what the UV light will do to it in the years to come, compared to the original finish is even more difficult.
The gunwhale cracking seems like there is too much filler and not enough glass matting (GRP) to add support, filler and gelcoat are purely cosmetic, so adding an extra layer won’t help. Hopefully the cracks are in isolated areas, so repairs can be done easily.

Anyway, I’m quietly confident this will be another interesting thread in the life of Blue Angel, you have never let us down in the past :)

in a couple of weeks we will have 2 Sardenian yards visiting the boat, and we will asc them for a quote,
one is the regular yard that P. uses in St Antiocco,
and the other is a yard in Bosa, that we visited last summer.
both have skills to work on wooden boats,..
and with good local assistance and translation ;-) we should be able to choose the right one

re your remarks about the work, all agreed,

you might remember that the new GRP gunwhale is made from "premade GRP panels, that are "glassed" together in position,
in some of the seams between different GRP panels there are cracks, nice vertical cracks, so nothing dramatic. but it appears that they didn't use enough glas or epoxy, tbc with the yard.

as usual I'll plan to do regular visits to the yard during the works, thats what we all like, don't we ?
and hopefully I can post some interesting pics in the rebuild thread

yes thats it P, including the shaded underside of the extension, nice !!!
the integrated nav light looks doable ,

lol, two days offline and you've remodelled BA ?
sorry still busy with real work (end of semester/exams etc)

I have to admit that starting to read the thread I didn't quite like the idea, but this last pic by P I really do like, well done P!
I probably wouldn't do such a large recess for the navlights, maybe not at all, maybe half recess half protruding at the rear with a 150-200mm recess on side elevation only.

However, my main objection is in not designing and building a hard/soft top yet, Med sun is getting worse, need to cover
BTW, Bart, you'll obvs have to do something about the front f/b tent poles, are you going to secure them on top of this extension or what?

cheers

V.

P, I'm with Vas on this,
I'm afraid its a bit too much function over form,

with your brilliant photoshop model,
its easy to imagine that without the black recess, it looks a bit more slick (imo)

Hi Vas,

since we have those tents, / sun shades, the problem with med sun is completely cured,
and to be very honest; looking at pictures from newer model with hardtop,
I think that the hardtop on this boat, is no esthetic improvement rather the opposite.

yes, the poles have to be taken care,
for now the option remains to make them as in this draiwng, going THROUGH the new extension,
for solid mounting, this would be the best option,
unless we make a steel frame / pole base inside the new overhang, been there done that for our crane
isn't that a nice enough challange ? :)
