I have partial teak decks - cockpit lockers, garage roof, anchor well. A 2014 project is to replace the current install as its worn quite heavily in areas. Is there a min/max or ideal depth?

Unless there is some good reason for changing the thickness from what the designer specified, I would stick with that. There will probably be some teak decking covered by a fitting which will not have been worn or sanded down so all you need to do is to measure the thickness in that area.

Teak thickness varies a lot. Some Swedish boats have it 13mm or more thick, and screwed down with teak plugs over the screw heads. Of course that means the depth of the plugs dictates how much it can wear down, typically about 5mm of wear exposes the screw heads. Some of the mass market boats have 6mm stuff, but its glued down. In my opinion the worst "teak" decks were the plywood ones fitted to some boats including some Moodys, where the teak wear layer was quite thin and easily worn through. On my Jeanneau the teak appears to have been about 8mm thick when new, glued down. Quite a bit of it in high wear areas is now down to 4mm, but the "rubber" caulking stands a bit proud of the surface, and gives some protection. It really needs replacing and when I had to replace the bit in the centre of the bathing platform I used 10mm thick iroko, because I had some. If I was replacing the teak myself I would go for 10mm thick if I could get it, as I think it would last longer, but if I do replace it myself I will probably go for synthetic stuff.

Depends on the method of construction. If it is screwed down and swept then the practical minimum is 9mm and up to 15mm. However the preference now is to glue and if it is straight laid 6mm is minimum. If you want swept and glued then again 9mm is minimum to be able to take the edge set. I have just laid a straight deck with 5mm which is the practical minimum.

You can get useful information on laying teak decks from the adhesive manufacturers either Saba or Sikaflex.

What is meant by swept please? My boat is Swedish, and the current teak is screwed down (at least in part, cos there are teak plugs).

So am i right in assuming that cos mine is partially covered (ie only cockpit lockers, garage and anchor locker) that i am "unswept"? If yes, what impact does that have?
