Hi, I'm new to this. Just in the process of buying our first boat and want to get it to the med! Have heard Denia port is very nice. Struggling to sort a berth out though, I don't speak Spanish and I've filled out requests online but heard nothing. Open to thoughts on marinas in Spain between Alicante and Barcelona. Thanks.

There's 3 marinas in Denia. And quite a few within 30 miles each way. Lots on here are further north in San Carles Marina, run by MDL. Do a search and you'll have plenty of posts to peruse, they have their own forum run by Mike, who posts here as Hurricane.

They get hundreds of emails like you are sending and tend to ignore them as to many are 'wannabees'.

Best idea is to take a few days to visit all the marinas in your selected areas and talk to the marina staff direct. They will all speak English.

Denia is not the best marina complex I would suggest.

As you will need some assistance in settling in perhaps Santa Carlas is best as there are lots of Brits there from the forum.

English is widely spoken in most marinas on the Spanish Costas (except Valencia in my experience - where they speak Valencian). The Spanish med coast is very popular for boaters from all over Europe and English tends to be a common language amongst other boaters. There are a lot of marinas from Cartagena up to Alicante and Denia. Bit of a gap from Denia up to San Carles, then north up to Tarragona, Empuriabrava, Barcelona etc. Lots of spaces in many marinas too so don't worry about finding a berth at a good price.
best thing to do is go and have a look around out of season when flights/cars/hotels are cheap and the marina offices will be quiet and pleased to see you. Google earth is a good thing to play with as well as you can easily see how far apart different places are.

From Denia to Valencia the coast runs North-South and not many places to explore. However a few miles South from Denia you round the corner and the coast runs East to West and is sheltered from Northerly winds making it both warmer and having a lovely coast with indents and bays. Look at marinas at Javea, Calpe, Campomanes and Altea.
If you are interested in purchasing a berth there are some advertised in THE COSTA BLANCA NEWS which is available online.

We have a boat in Alicante, great marina, very friendly. we spent a week end in Spain looking at all the marinas, nothing came close, easy to get to from the airport, good food and plenty to do and see.

Good luck with your new boat purchase.
Choosing a Marina is very much a case of personal taste. As some have said they take the time to go and visit before deciding where to chose a Base. We have taken the same approach and have had a few good mini trips doing our research.
Currently we are based in SC where we are very happy but have visited many marinas in both Spain and SOF.

As others have said, my experience is that someone will speak english if you call on the phone, but much better to plan a tour in person. I waited in vain for emails to be answered. It didn't appear to be the favoured form of communication.
Good luck.

As a marina, Denia is very nice.
Lots of modern restaurants in the quay and a short walk into town.
Why did you choose to look at Denia?
Maybe it is the 65 mile run to Ibiza that appeals.
As others have said, why not have a look at Sant Carles - about 140 miles north of Denia.
You get the best of both worlds here in SC - nice local Spanish resort but most of the marina staff speak good (if not perfect) English.
Lots of things going for the place - too many to mention in a short post.
Club House
On site restaurant
Swimming Pool
Floating pontoon berthing
Our own boatyard where you can work on your own boat.
Sheltered lagoon right outside the marina entrance.
98 miles from Portinatx (Ibiza)
And, above all - it is cheap.

If you would like to know more, just ask - or visit our berth holders forum (free to register and post) run by berth holders for berth holders. The site address is www.scmchat.com - lots of facilities and information on the forum/site.

We plumped for SCM principally as they are MDL - and Torquay is also MDL - so for our first foray into the Med " more of the same" did it for us. Have to say that we have looked at a few other marinas locations and for us SCM has yet to be beaten as an all in package.

From the OPs perspective, as a new buyer, it will be a nice problem to have with a few long weekends spent seeking out berths but if it helps, my only advice is "listen to the wife" :-)

We were in Denia for the last 2 years and have some great contacts, its much easier then SCM for several reasons, closer to Ibiza, closer to airports, and a lot nicer town.
I went to SCM to look around and found lack of english speaking and did not seem to offer any where as much as Denia.
We did a deal in the Marina to the left looking out to sea and it was a lot cheaper than the advertised price. I would give them a call they speak very good english and ask them for a deal, they have just built new restaurants and shops and a new car park so looks really modern and clean.
if you want contacts there let me know.

Re cheap berths around the south alicante area call Navicularia and ask for Shekzhad or Alexandria, nice people and they run most of the privately owned, rented out berths. It would give you a good idea of real prices rather than asking the marina direct (always a bit more expensive)
