Where do I find one, how much do they cost, what questions should I be asking them, what questions have I forgotten to ask here?

Want to get my bendytoy back to the uk and sell it. Gonna buy myself a nice catamaran because I have realised that if it's not a cat, it's a dog.

Are you abandoning ship?

Or do you want some help to sail back to the UK?

What are we going to do for entertainment - Anecdotes from Stingo?

Would you like to share your problem with your forum mates/fan club? I am sure there are lots of us here who may be willing to help.

Hi Stingo

Who ever you end up using you there are three different ways that fees can be agreed. Either per mile, per day or flat rate. Most skippers will also want some sort of payment for days spent stormbound or maintenance bound.

You also need to cover all expenses and have some money in contingency in case unforeseeable expenses occur.

Qualification wise you should be looking for a skipper with a minimum of Commercial Yachtmaster Offshore (or Ocean if relevant) and at least 8,000 miles under their belt, preferably a lot more.

Most good delivery skippers have a supply of crew they trust- I tend to use students from my courses who are looking for more mileage/experience themselves and we have trained up ourselves. Crew are generally unpaid, but you would cover the cost of their flights etc. However for larger boats and ocean deliveries it is sometimes appropriate to bring on a paid mate.

I had a look at your site and assume therefore that the boat is still over the other side of the pond. I may be able to help on the delivery front, depending where it is and what sort of date you need it back here for. If you email me doug@stormforce.biz with some details to think about I will have a chat with you and if our dates match I will then put a quote together.

Hope this helps
Best Regards
DOUG

while in general agreement i think that's a little harsh! and you won't get a lot of cat for the price of your present boat. it'll have to be smart but small or big but scruffy. off the top of my head i would suggest a prout 34 but if you're after performance it would leave you just as disappointed as now.

it sounds as though you want to get the boat back soonish which means a winter north atlantic passage. it would take pretty severe duress or a great deal of money to persuade me to take that on.

why not have a gentle cruise up the islands and bring her back via the azores in may/june, then you can go south again with a proper boat before the end of the summer.

stingo-some skippers ship their boats home as deck cargo. one of the rally antigua boats[blue water rallies did it a couple of years ago].they posted details on the net.sailed to florida and then picked the boat up in soton. might be worth investigating. would be interested in hearing your reasons for change to a cat. is it disatisfaction c the monohull, the particular design or are cats better suited to your purpose. thanks for your e mails re duogen. good luck chris

we were given a quote for shipping which would have left from guadeloupe. bit pricey but prices for a mono would be comparable to a delivery crew. i believe sunsail use a float-on-float-off ferry to move their boats between the caribbean and europe.

Your Ques:
1. Here or in classified ads in sailing mags. If you want a list of email addresses, email me.
2. Depending on passage, £1 per nautical mile or £100 per day (+or- a bit) + expenses.
3. Experience, references, qualifications.

Like Doug I teach and deliver as well. You may like to look at my website or email me. At the moment I am scheduled to bring a boat back from Antigua May/June.

At the F.Lauderdale B.Show one shipping Co offered me a deal on one particular sailing which I believe was from Antigua in March to Soton. $8,000 for my 40 foot mono. SWMBO has the brochure buried somewhere on board. Will get her to dig it out and PM you. "Normal" rate was in excess of $10,000

Thanks for all the responses and PM's. I'll contact those of you that sent PM's when I get back to the UK.

I am in no hurry to get Stingo back to the UK, but getting her there for the beginning of the season would be nice in terms of selling her.

The reason for the change is that I believe a catamaran is better suited to my cruising habits. Additional entertainment space being one of the more important criteria. I believe that once I am back cruising (after a stint back at the desk) I will spend at least 11 months of the year at anchor, so stability at anchor is another important criteria.

As for price, fortunately, I have a plot in hand that will finance the difference between what I sell Stingo for and what I pay for the cat. I have found one in the USA for US$165000 that's only 3 years old.
