Have been quoted 16000$US as ship cargo, so presumably a skipper will be a lower quote.

I've been quoted £150-200/day by delivery skippers ex expenses. Depending upon where you are on the eastern seaboard it's 3500-4000 miles, say at 120-150 miles a day you're looking at a trip of about 25-35 days, so I'd expect your costs will be in the region of £4-7K.
FWIW, at what you've been quoted I'd ship the boat back. I've twice hired delivery skippers to deliver on long passages, one a transat, and both times I've ended up with insurance claims, not to mention the additional wear and tear on the craft itself.

$16,000 sounds a little high. I was quoted $8,800 for a 32' boat a year ago (Fort Lauderdale to Southampton or Rotterdam). That was from Yacht Shipping Ltd.

I think you will find that http://www.yacht-transport.com/ who are dockline will charge around £6000.

have been quoted today by Dockwise for Port Everglades to Palma, Mallorca, the ridiculous sum of USD 38,310 /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif This in April/May, for a 52 ft, 12 tonne ketch.
