I wonder. If and when they take away the tax concession for boating deisel. How will this affect craft registered abroad and outside the EEC. Will they be able to claim this tax back? i.e. Although the VAT is paid on my vessel it is registered in Jersey consequently I don't have to pay Tax on my Insurance. If this be so will there be a proliferation of craft being re-registered under Honduran/Panamanian/Bahamian and even Cook Islands flags.

Re: Doom and gloom

Deisel = Diesel (I promise that's my last shot, you started it!)

Others may know better but I don't think non UK res customers can ever get refund of duty paid on fuel, esp not if it is consumed in UK. The structure of these taxes is quite different from structure of VAT

But what you say about insurance is interesting. I think you're saying that you avoid insurance premium tax (IPT). That is generally paid if the risk is in the UK, and your insurer seems to be taking the view that the risk is in Jersey by virtue of your Jersey registration, even though the boat and her owner are in Hoxfordshire. Seems good, I'd keep quiet about it lest they discover!

Re: Doom and gloom

JFM - If you fly to the Channel Islands and fill up there you can get a rebate on the VAT of the fuel you used / purchased in the UK or something like that. Is that applicable to the boating world? I've not done it yet but some als reckoned it was worth a £100 or so every flight to the channel islands.

Re: German pronunciation

With German words you invariably pronounce the second of the two letters, so Diesel is DEE-zel whereas Deisel would be DY-zel. As in 3rd Reich, etc etc

Re: German pronunciation

That's the third letter, surely. The second letter of 'Reich' is 'E'. Or are you one of these techy types who always starts counting with zero?

Re: DOH

The second of the two letters you're having trouble with, namely the "ie", not the second letter of the word. Try with Hofmeister etc :)

Re: Doom and gloom

That's not bad but in Weymouth it's only 20p from Raybar.
Barry, don't think you can do the same with boat diesel, but then that doesn't really interest you does it? On the other hand petrol in the CI's much cheaper than England, so could almost pay to go over there!

Re: Hofmeister

I don't recall ever having a problem with Hofmeister, or any other drink for that matter.

Aber dann kann Ich auch Deutsch...
