Hi Everyone. I have a Dehler 34 Top circa 1990. I am looking to purchase a No. 2 Genoa. How would I go about finding out the correct dimensions.

Thanks

I wouldn't expect there was a set of diffinitive correct dimensions for a no.2. A lot will depend upon what you want from your no.2 and what other sails you already have. I presume you have a no.1 that you can measure as a starting point.

As lpdsn has said, the dimesions will depend on your type of sailing. Do you want a full hoist and a shorter foot or vice versa, so somewhere between, also what area compared to the No.1. All sailmakers will have the information to give you a quote and then will require some information to tailor it to your requirements. Everything will be worked out from the I and J diemsions. These can be found here. http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=1240

Generally this site is very accurate. Looking at the sail plan, the drop at the top of the mast seems to equal the difference between the boom and the bow. Checking another web site does show a small difference. http://sailritesails.com/ShowAd.aspx?id=7418&sourceid=26

It's a handy website but all I'm advocating is taking it with a pinch of salt. I wouldn't order sails using the data, for example, but it would be useful for data to estimate roughly the sail area involved when chatting to sailmakers.

I agree these web sites are useful, but cannot guarantee any boat exactly matches their dimensions. The mast could have been replaced, owners made alterations, the sail plan altered for rating purposes, or it was originally manufactured slightly wrong. However it is a No.2 genoa so it will depend a lot on the sheet lead position and the exact area.

Around the time of your 34 was built, Dehler made some radical changes to the 34, in terms of appendages (keel & rudder) and rig (as well as the accommodation layout). The earlier version had 'IOR-shaped' keel & rudder. The later had an 'upside-down' keel and elliptical rudder, and also a taller rig, so any boat data site is likely to show these differences.

I've owned & raced both types and had sails made for them by Dolphin Sails.

My advice would be to get the sail maker to visit the boat, measure the rig and the existing No.1, and then to recommend the dimensions for a No 2.

Hope this helps

It depends to some extent where your boat is, but in the Solent area there are a number of reputable sail makers who I'm sure would be happy to measure up and advise. I'd recommend Jeckells - they have a rep covering the Solent area, who did an excellent job of measuring up for our new No 3 and cruising chute recently.

If you are after a solent based sailmaker with experience of D34s try Pete Sanders in Lymington-he has done several sails for my boat over the years and I am very pleased with them

Never ever rely on published rig data.
ALWAYS measure. Better still as others have said get the sailmaker to measure so any remedial, work is at his expense.
How do I know? I once had a full hoist No 3 made from published data. It was 150mm too long on the luff and had to be cut down!
