Definitive list of different types of boats

There are lots of RIBs down there. Aren't they the vessel of choice for many of the pirates? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Proof of data is a researcher's biggest headache, Michael! It's a good question though. I'm hoping the quetionnaire will be comprehensive enough to scare off time-wasters but not be too long to scare off every potential respondent. I'll be asking a whole load of questions that I hope will help qualify the validity of the answers too.

Somalia scares the **** out of me. What's even more scary is that most of the attackers aren't warlords, they're just local fishermen who have moved on from attacking the odd foreign fishing vessel to anything that passes through. The whole Red Sea situation is scuppering our plans of an easterly escape from the harsh winters of Turkey.

When pirates can get aboard 199 meter long car carriers doing 20 knots with 10 meters freeboard it would be hard to imagine what they wouldnt attack, unless it was painted grey and had a few large guns I guess. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

One thing that intrigues me with this is how you are going to get hold of your respondents? Unless you have access to some kind of database surely it will be very difficult to find more than, say, a dozen people who have been caught by pirates?
It makes getting anything approaching statistical significance from a questionnaire very difficult.
Just curious.

Absolutely. Getting them will be very dificult.

The survey will be web-based and will stay open and will be indexed and optimised for search engines. The first thing is to get it tested and up live. In the meantime I will be approaching various maritime organisations and searching the net to look for respondents. Fortunately I have time on my side to do this and I have no time scale for completion.

As we know anything less than 100 responses isn't really statistically significant but the survey does include open-ended responses so even if I only receive ten responses, providing they take the time to answer the open-ended questions I will have something to use as case studies.

I should emphasise that this survey is only part of my research. I'll be using other sources of data too but any help from you guys is thoroughly appreciated.

I'll be looking for volunteers to test the survey soon (and you don't have to be victims of piracy either, just good at pretending to be one).

Hello LakeSailor

Good to find you here, had an enjoyable stay with you and chatted about boats and Hull over breakfast.

It's a small world!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
