Can any one recommend a deck saloon sailing boat up to 45 ft? Also do any come with an inside steering position? I require a shallow draught option if possible, budget up to 250k.
I look forward to your knowledgeable advice.

Having gone through this exercise last summer many deck saloons had high level windows which you couldn’t see out of to drive from down below either by steering position or autopilot. We settled for a Regina 43 which is a pilot house and can be managed on passage from the chart table. We came from a Vancouver 38 pilot which again could be managed from the chart table. Both should be achievable in your budget. Both are around 1.7m draft. There are 12 Vancouver 38P’s and 45 Regina’s so both are reasonably hard to find. Good luck with your search.

Nauticat 42. We’ve recently sold our Nauticat 39 after 16 years, fabulous yachts. Hydraulic steering, not all boats have an inside steering position but many do, it was a buyer specification. Should fit within your budget, scarce though.

Moody Eclipse 43. Internal steering with pretty good visibility ahead and to sides, almost none astern. Very few built, but my late parents owned one. They were far more expensive than similar sized yachts, hence only 38 built between 1989 and 1991. All came with 1.47m shoal keel. In mast reefing was standard, as was bow thruster and the radar arch across the transom. Good looking boats.

Island Packet SP Cruiser.

The most modern motorsailer available.

1 metre draught, huge pilothouse with side by side helm seats, great build quality.

Not perfect, but what boat is?

Worth a look based on your OP.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned a Southerly, with a lifting keel seems quite useful idea even if a premium price compared to a more regular 38 or42ft vessel. If we could have justified the price a Southerly 42 would be ideal for sheltered helming etc. They also sail quite well I’m told.

Sailing yachts sometime have 2 hulls

Throw a catamaran into the mix. Commonly draw 1m (with mini keels and much less with dagger boards). Most will not have an 'inside' helm station but the helm station is commonly in the well protected cockpit. Good all round visibility from down below or from the cockpit, excellent manouverablity - because of the 2 engines.

Somewhat over budget as a new-build, but Willem Nieland's Globemaster 45 explorer yacht ticks all the boxes in terms of size, shallow draft, inside and outside helm positions, coupled with a rugged aluminium construction...

A Sirius 40 DS lift keel would be just perfect. However, there’s a four year waiting list for a new one and it’s nearly three times your budget; plus there are currently no second hand modern Sirius yachts available at all…

Like I said earlier, a good fit for the OE, good value, a few available in the USA, the Island Packet SP Cruiser is worth a look.

First Mate and I spent three years researching, looking at boats in the UK and Europe before deciding to buy Jarrow Lily.

Bottom line was that nothing ticked as many of the 'must have' and 'nice to have' boxes as the SP Cruiser.

Others, of course, would have different parameters - they might not be old farts with mobility issues.

Don't know if they're within budget, but the Sirius range of the Moody DS45 are pretty special.

The Eclipse 43 as mentioned and the E38 also I feel would make good impressions, external and internal steering as is the smaller E 33. Have sailed and demo'd all three and of these only the E33 disappointed for visibility from inside steering due to the shaded windows to port and starboard, in inclement weather found the clarity poor. The starboard side inner steering also took some getting used to especially when heeled. E38 seemed better appointed below. All three yachts sailed well considering the reduced area due to the in-mast furling.
Care needed to ensure gears and throttle are switched fully when changing fro outside to inner helming. Good quality joinery and showers /heads.
Sailing th e E43 we attained 10.5 knots in a brisk trip to Cowes just prior to delivery to Port Solent, on standard sails only. Lovely yachts.

I had a similar set of requirements but a little smaller than yours. Southerlys (keel will need maintenance). Vancouver 34, Nauticat were on my list and come in several larger sizes. Watch out for the cost of any renovations and replacements. IP is an interesting boat but is perhaps better compared with a catamaran (not meant insultingly!).

A proper deck saloon cum wheelhouse is fantastic at anchor, great for on route passage planning, let's you spot lobster buoys from below and shelter from rain. In practice I hardly ever steer from inside. But it is very useful to have a wheel, full instrumentation and autopilot controls inside and out. Saves a lot of running around!

Just something to keep in mind; with a modern mfd connected to a tablet the boat can be controlled from anywhere. But of course a modern mfd will not offer shelter….

I would be interested to know how the Island Packet can be better compared to a catamaran.

I have sailed on Catamaran in the Caribean and can find very little to compare.

Perhaps you are not familiar with the SP Cruiser?
