I'm sorry if this has been done to death but I'm looking for advice on painting my decks. Just the non slip areas.

The deck has been epoxy filled as the balsa core turned to mush. There are some imperfections where the holes have been filed. Will the likes of sandtex be able to 'build' up enough to cover these imperfections?

I know about prep and have cleaned the decks I will probably wipe them down with acetone before painting.

What is the best implement to use to get a good grippy surface? I would think a roller, but what type? I take it sandtex fine textured is the best one to use? Any other similar recommendations? I was thinking a light grey as my decks are are off white already.

Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Many thanks!

Have a look at Kiwigrip.
Water-based acrylic.
I was a fan of Sandtex on previous boats, but the present one had all manner of repairs to the decks (ferro and fibre-glass sheathed ply coachroofs) which needed some heavy duty cover.
The Kiwigrip can be trowelled on, then textured with a roller which came with the paint. The heavier the application, the more textured.
There are some good instruction videos on Youtube.
Its more expensive than other deck paint, but it works and clean-up is easy.

the textured masonry paints from e.g. B&Q, Homebase, are as good as Sandtex. Mine lasted at least five years on solid, non-flexing GRP before needing a repaint.

Textured paints are not much use at building up gaps and hollows. Perhaps resin with micro-balloons ?

So try and have everything as fair as possible and then mask.
What about technique? Type of paint roller, do I do the edges first?

two rollers (the type specified for textured paint have little dimples) , one wide , one small.

Tape up, then it doesn't really matter whether you do the edges first or last.

If the paint looks uncomfortably textured, a brush will smooth it down, but you will need some sticky-up bits to provide grip.

Have fun. BTW, lots of colours available, so a rose-pink, or lettuce green - whatever takes your fancy !

Haha, I already have a heavily oxidized hull which is pink so I'll stick with a nice light grey!

Ok I'll get a dimpled roller and keep a few brushes on hand. Many thanks!

Sorry to bump the thread but can anyone help on what solvent I should wipe the deck areas that need painted?

Lift sorted for Monday. Got most of my supplies sorted. Not looking forward to all this work to be honest!
