Deck Paint

My wife fancies a change of colour to our decks. I've always used International deck paint, but the colour range is limited. Has any body experience of this; seems very good value for money as well.

They are mentioned in this thread Is there a deck paint... and a few others if you put sml paints in the search function.
I could have done with knowing about them for the deck paint on my last boat. I ended up using dulux textured masonry paint to get the right shade, which lasted about 4 to 5 years including being jet washed each spring !

Thanks for the link to that earlier post. I will use this product without the beads as the deck already has a raised finish.

I highly commend Premier Marine Paints. Great value, nice people and made in the UK. Ive used their deck paints for 10 years now and I’ve only done a complete repaint twice I think.
Their epoxy paint is good for bilges and lockers too.

I am surprised it had to be redone twice in 10 years! Is this normal for deck paint on GRP?

I don't have any meaningful experience of deck paint, but had been toying with the idea of painting my GRP decks (the moulded 'non-slip' textured areas only), mainly for aesthetic purposes. If it is likely to need redoing every few years I definitely won't be doing it!

I did mine after 5 years (International Deck Paint). Even then it was only high wear patchs that really needed it.

I just repainted one area this winter because I applied it too thick and its non slip properties were poor. A well brushed out thin coat is better than thick as the sand or beads stand out more.

Last winter we did our deck paint again. The expensive Awgrip two pack deck paint system failed after 3 years. It simply wore out from liveaboard use.
This time we used Jotun two pack paint and a polymer bead supplied by Toppus Group. All far better value than Awgrip ( about third of the price). The finish is better with the Jotun paint.
The benefit of polymer beads is they are clear plastic beads that absorb the paint. As the paint wears, you don't get the black dots associated with normal none slip additives.

I haven't used the deck paint, but I've used SML Lustre two part marine enamel and I was very impressed. And unlike other two part paints, the hardener doesn't turn to jelly a few weeks after opening it, which is very handy for doing touch ups.

There's a local chap who's so dissatisfied with the usual range of colours that he paints his wooden yacht with Farrow and Ball instead. ('Pointing' in water-based exterior eggshell, iirc.) He has to redo it every year but it looks terrific.

SML will give you any colour you care to mention. Give them an RAL code and off you go

She's in commission all year round. So they mostly just get ingrained muck. I've had no issues with the paint lifting.

international as often happens discontinued the colourdeckpaint i used i phoned tech. dept. mix oxford blue toplak & grey deck paint equal proportions by volume, in my cas i ended up with2 x 750ml tins, one tin per coat is enough, i still have a full tin in the shed😒

I'm a bit of an SML fanboy, Cu-Pro AF below the waterline (on top of their epoxy HB primer etc), 1 pack bilge paint inside and recently their "Lustre Polyurethane Gloss Topcoat" (2 pack) for the boot top.

No issues with application (old AWB) or performance and they are more than happy to talk to you if you have questions.

I have used SML products.
They have afaik revamped their polyurethane finishes including ? Lustre Or sommat? at least once. Something to do with how it flows out when applying by hand.
The Jotun 2 pack range stuff is good.
And with a RAl number you can have any colour, as noted.

Anyways,

My best deck result was with Hempel single pack to be fair.
It just rolls out so beautifully on a warm day.

If youmdont use your boat much a single pack paint might work. They are not as durable as two pack paints.

My rather...er...heterogeneous deck paint of unknown provenance suffered damage from my pressure washing. Putting off sanding the whole thing down, so I'm experimenting point priming it with boiled linseed and crumpled aluminium foil, a technique I developed for my last Taiwan car, which had a little remaining sun blasted paint and couldnt easily be made to look worse. Stopped it rusting, an excuse I no longer have. Perhaps I should have got a steel boat.

Might not work, and if it does I'm not sure what I'll overpaint with. Maybe more of the same.

Have you got exposed glass there?
Some fine crazing which could go down to the glass. This isnt intended to address that but might I suppose penetrate it in places where it underlies lifted paint.

This might help seal it, but might also interfere with later repair attempts with epoxy or polyester resin.

If you want easy, but not that long lasting then a single part paint will do fine.

For longevity and best appearance I think its worth taking the time, tons of guides out there.
I used awl-grip particles on this cockpit cover, with a Jotun 2 part semi-gloss available from SML.
Colour matched to the correct RAL cover.

Two coats of paint, particles sprinkled on when wet, brushed off when dry and then a final sealer coat of paint over the top.
