Deck hatch - how much sealant?

Now that it's stopped raining for a few minutes I want to replace the Houdini hatch with a Gebo. Got the hatch, got the polysulphide sealant, all good to go. But how thick a bead of sealant should I be applying? I also understand it shouldn't be fully tightened down for a few days.
Any advice gratefully received.

I aimed for a maximum of 1 mm when the flange was tightened down initially. I applied a bead all-round the deck flange / upset and then used a plastic spreader to flatten it out to the required depth. By flattening it out you will get excess squeezing out all-round.

When I removed the original hatches I discovered that the bead had obviously been applied and then the hatch stuck down without flattening the bead initially. It was clear that the bead had not spread out evenly and allowed water under the hatch flange in places.

Thanks for the advice. I hadn't even considered spreading the sealant!

This is how I do it.Apply a bead of sealant and spread it with a knife leaving a good thickness.Allow to cure for two hours or snce tack free(ish) apply a fresh layer of sealant and fit the hatch.Put the fasteners in and tighten lightly.After one day tighten some more and a bit more a few days later.
