Decisions, decisions ...

Right, tiller pilot it is then! (Wouldn't dare do anything else given the overwhelming consensus of opinion :D)

You know it makes sense :D

I think the tillerpilot is the best investment you could make if sailing shorthanded and essential if sailing single-handed, which I do quite a bit.

I have a tp2000 and find the auto-tack feature very useful, allowing me trim the Genoa through the tack. The boat does have to be well balanced sail wise for the feature to be really effective.

With regard to VHF I inherited a standard fixed set with the boat which works OK, but I mainly use a handheld for calling marinas etc. as it's more convenient to use in the cockpit.

Suggest you look at www.jgtech.com as they have SH radios at very appealling prices!

Prices on JGTECH are usually quite competitive.
First hand experience: A word of warning - check that they have what you want in stock or you may be in for a long and frustrating wait.
Be prepared for lots of unanswered e-mails and phone calls not returned. 'We're only a small outfit' ...
Not only that, but my CC card was charged the moment I placed my order and when it finally shipped (3 months later) I was informed that the price had gone up (significantly!).

That being said, I have also bought items from them which they did have in stock. These were always keenly priced and arrived within days of my order.

So: check if your order is stocked (phone! as website not always up to date), if not you are probably better off ordering elsewhere.

Bought the new VHF over the counter at Seamark Nunn. Installed and hopefully working but nobody is talking! (Heard one brief transmission on 67, otherwise nada). Now inn getting worried as to whether its working

Will have to order the tiller pilot, nobody had what I want in stock

Explain that it is a new installation, I'm sure they will be more sympathetic.

That thought did occur to me. What is the "official" position on radio checks though? Do the coasties mind? I know there's a lot of negative posts about them clogging up the airways in the South but I haven't noticed a vast amount of VHF traffic over the weekend so does the occasional radio check call matter?

I don't think that there is an official position round here (Solent) other than they like to use Channel 67 as it's "routine traffic" - lot of people use Ch 16 which clogs it up....

If you're worried about it, just pick a marina frequency and ask them how much an overnight berth would cost or something... ?? :o
