Good morning East Coast cruisers.

It looks to me that it should be possible for a 1st timer to leave the Deben at the earliest sensible time in the tide & enter the Ore on the same tide. However, I really value any comments, advice or cries of, "nooooooo!" from forum members.

We are a 29' bilge keeler and have all the usual charts, ECP, updates/chartlets from ECP website and so on. We'll also put a call in before we depart to the extremely generous honorary pilots mentioned in the ECP.

Thank you in advance for any tips.

Yes, it's a sensible option. You will have to punch the flood tide but it isn't very far. If you have enough tide to leave the Deben you will have enough to enter the Ore. Lovely river, have a good trip.

You should have no problems with your suggested route. The entrance to the Ore is easier than the Deben this year. Enjoy the Ore. There are places to anchor along the 12 miles to Aldeborough, but moorings at Aldeborough are cheap. My 32ft Fulmar cost just £5 per night - a true East Coast price. Have a good time but do not shout about it too mch. Nod, nod, wink, wink.

Are there any visitors moorings at Aldeborough?

I‘ve dug up a few historic threads but can’t find anything current.

I just picked up a buoy then phoned the boatyard if that one was ok. Left the money in a cockpit locker. So free to go ashore.

You can still anchor near the Martello if you want to.

There are three visitors moorings opposite the martello tower. Each is rated to take three yachts, subject to agreement with anyone already on them. Some people are happy for raft ups, others can be very hostile. The boatyard man won't get involved, wisely. The moorings are operated by the boatyard, not the yacht club. Plenty of room to anchor and good holding.

I phoned Upsons yesterday to enquire if there was a vacant mooring and was informed that there are just the 3 V moorings and nothing else. Decided on a mooring at Orford instead and very pleasant it is too. Oh, the HM was very helpful. (phoned in advance and he directed me to a suitable mooring) Good dry landing at the SC pontoon.

And we've just arrived - thanks for the advice. A smashing sail all the way to Orford.

On the advice on the HM we left Felixstowe Ferry 3 hours before high water - he advised that when the sand bar nearby was covered, the entrance bar was ok - today, I wouldn't take that as gospel any other day.

The Ore bar was fine - not too close to the green and stick in the middle of the channel was the HM advice.

Assuming you are going to leave the Ore on the flood, allow plenty of time against the flood - 3-4kts over the ground, I was doing 2kts OTG on the last sea reach outbound on Thursday.

Thanks - at least that gives me plenty of time to enjoy the scenery!
