Deben and Ore entrance chartlets 2015

First time in we breathed a sigh of relief and then went aground on the Horse..........going in rather than transits I always look backwards to ensure i'm going drectly between buoys and not just heading for the one in front

In those good old days they did , until the channel shifted South too much. I normally find a mark on the wall or beach to use as a transit, and look back as well like a spectator at a tennis match flicking from front to back. I also find lining the backstay up with a join in the pushpit helps stay in track with the buoy astern

Now that the Horse buoy has gone it's oddly difficult to know where the edge of it is, there will be more running on there.

We've been talking to John about those two 'bars', they didn't look quite right somehow and we wonder if it's possible there was an anomaly in Trinity House's survey data - Imrays will be taking a look and I hope we'll get an answer on Monday.
Mind you, in their NtM, Trinity House did call the seabed at the entrance 'highly mobile'!
OK, the situation is that Trinity House want the Imray-drawn chartlet to stay the same pending a second survey. They say their data showed shallows N of the Mid Knoll on the day of the survey, even if John's own DIY survey shows deeper water right through there now. So the advice is, proceed as ever with caution, and if at all concerned give John a call.

Why? The moorings show the track perfectly? I'd rather have the extra bouy where it's needed, halfway out of the bar!

We'll see what happens on the horse this season.

However i agree, if it's a choice I'd rather run onto the horse than the bar and its a great help out there.

I came out of the Deben on Saturday morning, an hour and a half after low water. Whilst the water was pretty turbulent on the bar, (NE 4) even on the flood, the best water was 25 yards to the East of the Knoll Spit. This mark is a really useful addition, and definitely being put to better use. John White should be congratulated!

I was concentrating on keeping the boat on the line and didn't watch the echo sounder very closely. Anyway, the boat was moving so much, the echo sounder readings were very erratic, between one and a half and two meters? Minimum depth on the chartlet .9 meter, about .21 predicted at low water Harwich? I am sorry I cannot be more helpful.

We came out on Thursday at HW and found a minimum of 4m as we approached Mid Knoll. With 3m of tide this would equate to a mere 1m at LW. We heeded John White's advice and gave each bouy a 25 yard offing.

That may well account then for our substantially lower than expected readings, we were at half tide and only had 1.4m of water, but we kept very close to the buoys, no more than 5-10 yards.
