I'm on a mate's mooring while mine awaits a diver, it has a chain strop and it is *covered* in weed (but luckily no mussels, so no shredded hands)

Any top tips to remove the weed? Wire brush? torch? (The chain is stainless if that makes a difference?)

If its a problem maybe dunk it in a bucket of something inimicable to life,

Detergent, )squirt, sodium triphosphate (spoon)and bleach (cup) in-half abu ket of water should do it, though freshwater alone might work if you can leave it long enough.

Itll grow back though

The mooring owner may not appreciate you applying any mechanical (or chemical) treatment on his s/s chain.
Weed generally grows when unused with pickup below water. In use and Above water the weed generally dries and either falls off or can be pulled off.

Our boats have been ashore over the winter, so yes, the chain and pickup have been unused over the winter.

Re mechanical removal - Yup, hence the question: "What's ok and not ok?"

My mooring remains in water all year. Yes the chain grows a lot of weed and mussels. It also is stainless steel. I have in the past dived down with snorkel to scrape it clean with scrapper or hoe. I can sort of do the top 1 metre. I have attached a tackle to the chain as low as I can reach and hauled it up to the bow of the boat. So I can reach down another metre. In my case fouling is not so bad down deep as it scrapes the bottom. No I never did get it clean but I don't think that matters.
Water is warm but that just means weed grows faster. Wear stout gloves.
Of recent years I have got older and government requiores the mooring to be professionally inspected every 2 years which means it gets cleaned by a diver. Albeit I pay for the clean. But is still like to have a scrape of the always in water buoy and top of chain. ol'will

Best course of action imo - leave it and just relax. It’s been a long winter, enjoy just being afloat.
