De-weeding afloat

I have a Scrubbis which worked well but the head is now badly worn. Given the cost of a replacement I plan to cover the old head with astroturf or similar and see how that works. Results to be published in due course!

Okay, i had a go with a garden broom with a fender zip tied under the head.

It worked well enough clearing weed close to the waterline, but the handle was a bit short really for scrubbing.

I did try zip tying into to the boat hook, which was sort of ok, the zip ties didnt hold it in place for all that long.

But this approach, broom-head/fender/long pole definatly has potential

It used to be fairly common to see a scrubbing diver in marinas . I get the feeling that they have either been banned for perhaps insurance reasons, or too expensive compared to a scrub in the slings.

This should give you the idea, half a windsurfer wishbone, a wooden pad, a piece of pool noodle and a scrubbing pad of your choice. It works a treat, I think this is mark 111 😎😎A731B707-58DA-4445-98AC-94541445C425.jpeg1F3F8BE8-B3E8-48BD-B95F-FF2FB8B12364.jpeg4B0A9C79-EF82-4774-9F0C-7DD411CAA122.jpeg

I have success using a small pressure washer to clear the weed from just below the water line. I keep the nozzle just above the water and blast away. I've been pleased with the results. The antifoul is eroding so I go carefully. Summer build up occurs as the boat is ashore October and relaunched in November, freshly antifouled.

I swim once a week to keep us squeaky clean down below. It’s quite nice in the river, I have a wetsuit, and short swimming fins. I go over it with a scrubbing brush, then a nylon scourer as required.the centreboard and rudder are retracted on the mooring, I drop the board to clean the leading edge. By this time of year it’sca huge advantage over other boats. Our XOD is craned and jetwashed instead. Even a hint of slime on that is the difference between hero and zero. Half a knot if the bottom isn’t utterly spotless. So, if you're overtaken by a Dragonfly, it's not actually as fast as you think, you’re probably carrying an invisible speed regulator below your waterline. There's a lot of absolutely filthy boats out there, it slows you down and ruins your VMG to windward If sailing, and wastes fuel if you’re motoring. And a truly amazing and alarming amount.
